I am trying to choose a new house. I want a bigger garden ... the one I have now is south westerly ... is that the best type for a gardener? What 'facing' would you look for?

South West facing garden is by far the best direction....stay where you are! (and plant your crops closer together).....Cheers, Tony.

Hi sweettweet,
I agree with having a S.W. garden. We were fortunate when we bought our house, that the garden faced this way, as we loved the property. Now after 6 years here things have worked out really well in the garden, I wouldnt change anything .Mo.
Mine faces SE and gets sun all day in the summer until about 6pm. Well it would if the neighbour's leylandii hedge didn't shade it all down one side
It all depends on what's around you. My house faces full south but has garden on all sides so I have sun and shade, well drained and moist soils, reasonably sheltered and very exposed beds. These throw up all sorts of challenges but I can grow a wide variety of plants but nothing tender.
I am lucky enough to be surrounded by pasture to the south and west and arable to the north and east. The only problem with this is occsional drift from agri chems being sprayed on crops as my main garden and the veg plot are to the north of the house.
Just popped in to say HELLO to Obelixx, Hello.
My garden faces west and we get the sun until 8. Have some high buildings around so garden not in full sun all day, just the right amount.
My garden is South facing and should I ever move, I would make sure that I had the same. Did not know when we bought the house 45 years ago which way it was facing (pair of idiots), but I have so enjoyed having the sun, when it is out, all day. My patio is a real suntrap as it has an 8ft fence one side and 8ft brick wall on the other. Lovely.
Very knowledgable gardners in this board, which I am not, would probably plump for something different so I would take heed of what they advise.
My house faces s/se and I have garden all the way round. We are surrounded by fields and 2 of our boundaries are streams. The only downside is that large trees in the field across the lane give too much shade in high summer but you learn to adapt planting
Hello Amazing. I trust you are well.
Keeping on topic, it can be fun to change aspects and conditions and explore a new style of gardening so keep your mind open to possibilities in new sites and don't be constrained by a rigid wish list.
Well, thank you for your replies. I'm house hunting and your words will stay with me ...
As you said, this house was bought pre gardening ... so I was lucky. In fact, I remember the back garden was just lawn and I had never grown anything! Now, only the best and more of it will do
