Oh Lynda, on Essex Radio Gardening programme yesterday someone else had been told to cut off the old leaves of her tree fern. The presenters told her to find that person and beat them with a big stick. Apparently she should have folded them up pyramid style, stuffed straw inside and tied them to help protect the plant, then fleece over. The general concensus was that she had lost the plant. They did advise leaving it until next Spring to see if any more leaves appear, but were very doubtful. Sorry about that. Nan x

I did the leaf folding over thing with my tree ferns last autumn and then wrapped them in fleece, but lost them all the same. It was one stinger of a winter. If it hasn't shown any sign of growth this year then Nan is right, I'm afraid, it's as dead as a doornail.

But I left my fern trunks in situ this year and grew purple morning glory up them (Ipomoea Grandpa Ott). They looked wonderful, and suitably exotic.
