Hi I just thought that you may be interested in something that I came up with for recycling old plastic milk bottles I am using these around the inside edge of my raised beds to try and conserve water. Ten Bottles will hold approximately 2 gallons of water and is sufficient for a meter run.
Cut around the middle just under the handle line around three sides thus leaving a hinge. This can be inserted into the base of another bottle I estimate 140 bottles are required for a Square meter and would hold 28 gallons of rain water
Just set the modules around 300mm deep along the under edges of the raised bed. My hope is that these modules will help keep the edges of the bed moist and may be a useful source of moisture for runner beans and plants that run a tap root. I am in a terraced house that does lend itself to water butts. Let me know what you think please

My first thought was, "Ooh, that's a clever idea."

And then I thought about possible problems: the water could become a breeding ground for mozzies. And even if you don't get them, then you're likely to get green algae. And if stagnant, with leaf litter etc getting into it (almost inevitable) then it will smell pretty horrible.

I don't want to put a downer on your idea: try it and let us know how you get on. You may have a perfectly viable method of water conservation!

It must be the late hour but I just can't picture this in my mind. Can you put a photo on?
Mind you it wouldn't work for me as I still have glass milk bottles from a milkman.
I'm sure I could get hold of some if I thought it would work though.

I am all for water conservation and recycling, bit am still, like Sue slightly puzzled; where is the water to fill these bottles/modules going to come from?

I'm also having trouble working out what this looks like. I am always keen to try new ideas so could we see a photo?
