    Hello

I have a border that I am looking to add a climbing rose to.

At the moment I have 3 iceberg roses in the front of it, behind it is a choysia, red robin, and a etoille violette and prince charles clematis. I would like a climbing rose to grow with the clematis, which is a backdrop to the white of the iceberg roses. At first I thought about using a lilac rose, and had settled on blush noisette, howevre I dont really like the strong clove scent of blush noisette.

Can you think of any other not too rampant lilac climbing roses? or do you think lilac is the wrong colour, and if so what do you think would work? It has to be something that looks good with the blues and purples of the clematis, and also with the white of the iceberg roses.

    many thanks

I think this combo of mauve and white and apricot climbing roses doesn't look too bad:

The roses happen to be Gardenia, Russeliana and Mme Lauriol de Barny, but you could chose varieties more readily available.

They are not mine (unfortunately). smiley - sadface

yes indeed a gorgeous photo but in case anyone is interested in Mme Lauriol de Barny, the lovely pink bloomer on the right, I can tell them that it only flowers from approx May 15 to end June and is at it's best in early June. Fairly good weather resistance for such a many petalled variety though.
I don't know the other two.

As an alternative to lilac I might suggest looking at the modern Austin climber 'Mortimer Sackler'. My plant is only young but I'm liking it very much as it's virtually thornless and is a blowsy pink/white combination yet weather resistant once again. A worthy addition.

thanks salino - i was actually thinking about mortimer sackler! is it lilac, because many of the suppliers i have looked at dont call it lilac, but i did think it looked quite lilac!? is it quite a strong colour? the only other one im thinking about is narrow water

hi rosalba, I've missed you again.

That looks a lovely one but it's not one I'm familiar with so couldn't advise you on it. I love the lilac edgings on it.

MS I wouldn't describe as a strong colour, quite subtle. It gives a light airy effect but seems to complement all the other pinks and purples and whites that we usually grow. There are so many to choose from. I have another Austins called 'Spirit of Freedom' which I would describe as lilac and it's got a gorgeous scent but so many petals it tends to ball in this wet weather, so I'm not sure I can recommend that one or whether I will keep it. A tallish shrub/ or small climber in time so I'm told.
