Hi ALL,
We had visitors today and as the weather here has been cloudy and a mist shower early this morning and a bit dull this afternoon it didnt matter about the gardening and visitors arriving,
But they fell in love with the garden and so we had a walk around it,
I was asked what that called and can you eat any of it,
When i pointed out that they we're pointing at tomato/ And lettuce and red cabbage /carrot ect they really did feel amazed at what can be grown in the flower border's.
I was asked if anyone else grew veg in the flower beds?
So im asking do you ? And if so what?
Hi,
Ive heard of growing beetroot in the border , the leaves look great amongst flowers. Mo.
It's all soil isn't it, so anything that grows should grow together. Having said that, I do tend to keep flowers and veggies apart, because if flowers tangle around each other that can be lovely, but I want to weed and see my veggies better. However, beans up a fence are great, and certainly carrots do well, I think the flowers confuse the carrot fly - if it works for you then it is great.
It is fuuny though isn't it how pwople see what they expect to see, and not what they are actually seeing - had you got the tomato etc. alone no-one would have wondered what it was - we are a strange lot we humans!
I suffer from lack of space in my beds, so grow veg in pots, but I do grow some of my herbs in among the flowers, I have sage, lemon balm and fennel growing beneath my palm trees behind a bench and when you sit there the smell is amazing. Nan x
I've only got a very small garden so I have always planted my veg in the flower borders since I started growing veg. This year I have courgettes, beans, carrots, beetroot, salad leaves, cucumber, raddish.I've never grown carrots before so waiting to see what happens. I grow tumbler toms in black buckets sold cheaply from the garden centre. The courgettes look quite good amongst the crocosmia!

I have beetroot and cabbage in my flower borders as I ran out of space in the veg plot in the garden, in fact I think there is a random sprout plant as well.

I grow parsley right beside my summer-flowering fucshias. They like the same spot in the garden - just on the borderline of sun and shade.
