Plse could you advise on the best type of (ideally )evergreen plant that will thrive in shady areas.
I have a spot underneath an evergreen hedge that needs a plant!!.
Thanks
2Labradors.
It can be difficult to plant under evergreen hedges because the soil can get incredibly dry. If it's not too dreadful you could try things like Luzula, Heucheras, Dianella and some ferns - all these would be evergreen.
Some of the most drought-tolerant evergreen ferns are Polystichums. Also try Polypodium, Asplenium and some Dryopteris.
Cyclamen are a good plant for if nothing else will grow.
Hi, Skimmia, Euonymous, Mahonia, Pachysandra, Ivy, Hellebore, Euphorbia, Tiarella and Tellima and Primula to name a few.
Also may I recommend Jane Taylor's book called 'Gardening in Shade'
Sue
all good suggestions so far, just to add Liriope muscari, geranium phaeum, crocosmia, christmas box (Sarcococca).
Periwinkle has always done well for me. It's tough, spreads along very well under its own steam and flowers for months.
