    hi Adrian,

well, lots of lovely photos and I give you credit for trying a border in front of a row of conifers, and with success too.
In front of that high grey fence, I would probably have planted a shrub rose hedge, ones that grows to 6 foot and with pink flowers, but that's just my taste, or possibly hardy fuschia like Riccartonii which grows to that height.

One suggestion about photobucket, it would have been nice if you had put the names to the plants, I do like to know exactly what I'm looking at as there were some things there I liked but no idea what they were.

sorry for being so shallow but you're not bad looking either, you should be on tellysmiley - smiley

I like many aspects of your garden, but my favorite pic is of your dog !!
Back to your garden... I love the areas that are more cottage style, sorry i am a begginer and dont know many flower names i saw cosmos ( i have that in my garden, so i recognise it )
I like the bush/tree in your front garden with the white flower i thought that was very pretty, does it smell? And I loved your hanging baskets.
I also have the same problem with the fence, i have it all round my back garden, at the moment i have a couple of clamatis and a jasmine but they have only been planted this year so obviously they are not giving good coverage at the moment, but i am quite happy to wait. For instant effect i suppose you would be looking at painting it or hang some kind of flower boxes on them.

Hi the shrub in the front garden is a mock orange and is slightly scented , i had permision to paint the fence but i would prefer a more permanent fix the border is 6ft deep and getting to it to paint each year would be a problem , the rose idea is a good idea .

Very nice Adrian. Put's my garden to shame which is devoid of any colour at present, apart from my Black Eyed Susan and a couple of clematis. All these lovely photos people are putting on are giving me inspiration. I think it would be better to try and hide the fence rather than start painting it. It will then become a lifetime job!

Love the garden Adrian but your lawn is to die for how do you get it looking like that I would kill for a lawn like that, what's the name of the King Charles, he's sooooo cute.

I think your garden is lovely but if I were you I would get that row of Laylandii cut back ASAP otherwise when you do trim it you will be cutting into old wood which will be brown for ever. Sorry, but in my opinion garden centres should be banned from selling them. Planting them is an act of agression unless they are trimmed regularly as a hedge.

The front lawn does not look too good it drys out very fast as ive a big tree in the front garden . i planted the leylandii hedge five years ago and its 4ft wide and nearly 7ft high i no its a thug of a plant but i needed a very quick fix to secure the garden and i realy dont like fences.

Agree with you about the Leylandii Adrian, they serve a purpose. I've got the yellow one as a screen behind my greenhouse as am next to an alleyway! But the previous poster is right. You do need to trim/shape it at least 1X & better 2X a year. August a good time as no birds should be nesting in it now. Shouldnt be too difficult to maintain the height/width you've got now, but leave it & it becomes a major job.

With your fence situation, could you fix some trellis to the supports? or even have it actually in front of the fence. If you widened the border, sorry more work, you would then have easier access to do any maintenance, especially if you deliberately leave a gap before the rest of the planting. Then endless possibilities for different climbers.

Taller shrubs at the back can also be used as 'hosts' for annual/perennial climbers, that, preferably dont need tying in because of the access. You've already got Delphiniums & sunflowers & they & similar height plants could be the next layer in front of the shrubs & so on down to the front of the border. Just a few thoughts..... J.
