Help
My grand-daughter has planted 3 sunflower seeds - 2 have grown normally - one head per plant, the other has 5 heads!
I have googled and checked, all I can find is that sunflowers usually only have one head
Has anyone else come across this'multi head' sunflower?
Hi mike, some are single stem and single headed and some are not. I use to grow the multi headed because of the different colours. Every year wind storms would rip the stems off the plants no matter how well I tied them up. This year is only single stem and head. Unfortunately I can't find a single stem sunflower with a flower colour other than yellow.
Try 'Earthwalker'. I bought the seeds from Chilterns. Although there are some side buds, they've reached a good height - 6foot or so and the central flower is large. I could pinch out the side shoots if I wanted to keep them single. There's a picture on the Â鶹Éç Gardening home page under Desktop calender. Pretty sure it's one of mine, as it happens!
Hi Trillium, thanks for the solution. I like Earthwalker, grew them one year but of course I didn't think to pinch the side shoots. This year I just let sunflowers from scattered bird seed grow up. They're always tall with a single stem. Back to various coloured sunflowers next year.

I have a 'Black Magic' sunflower and one of them has 4 heads on guess it's nice that way, as one head dies another opens.
