I've had a Wedding Day rambler for 4 or 5 years and haven't really pruned it. I'll have to prune it this year when its finished flowering but, at the moment, its like a huge wall of thousands of lovely cream and white flowers. Breathtaking, I just have to stand and look at it (and smell it). I thought I'd prune it quite hard because it grows fast and strong. Any ideas please?
You can keep it renewed and vigorous for years by taking out a third of its growth every year in spring. Choose the oldest looking stems - more cracked and scarred than new growth - and remove them from low down then feed your plant with a liquid tonic of rose or tomato food and a good handful of slow release food such as fish, blod and bone. A mulch oif well rotted manure and/or garden compost is a good idea too.
Pruning after flowering should be no more than a tidy up to keep the plant in bounds if needed. Do not feed it after mid June as this encourages sappy growth that hasn't time to mature before the frosts start in autumn.
