Does anyone have any ideas on what trees I can plant in front of our 6ft brick wall (which backs onto a road)to help reduce traffic noise?

I want something to grow above the wall but does not get too wide and use up garden space. The wall does not reduce traffic noise well as it just gets blown over the top.

I have heard of rocket conifers but think these are slow growers.

    Thank you for any ideas

Hi Emma - we'd suggest a beech, as it will be easy to maintain, you can allow it to grwo as wide or as tall as you wish and it will hold its leaves all year round. Enjoy!

I don't know if Leylandii would cut out the noise, but I have read that they are good at removing airborne pollution from road traffic. A hedge of these need not be too wide if you keep on top of it, i.e. trim it regularly.

How long is the wall you want to plant against?
The problem is I think any hedge to get above 6 foot will take a while to get there and once it's there if not all that thick, will not really cut out the noise.

But it will help, mainly because it disperses the sound from reflections off the leaves,so it seems quieter, not so much from blocking it out.

So along those lines, constructing a trellis type thing, starting at 5 foot high and in from the fence and using a fast growing evergreen climber like clematis armandii trained up and along it might give you a quick 'dampening effect whilst your true hedge grows.

Anything with the suffix 'fastigiata' will grow upright. There would be lots of contenders.

Also if it's not a long wall then buying in larger plants will help.

Sorry Hedging does nothing whatsoever to reduce sound pollution.

Hedging does reduce the threats perceived by the eye
and also reduces substantially fume/particulate pollution thrown up by heavy traffic.

Sound pollution is only reduced by a solid wall, which throws the noise right back where it comes from, (possibly with brass knobs on).

    Sound drastically reduced.

Then they will start to wonder, and even take more care!
