I would love to have chickens running about my garden, but how practical would it be. Yes I do know I would need a hen house to keep them in at night but the thought of new laid eggs is lovely any ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi sneyom,
I bought some chooks last year about this time and have had eggs galore and lots of fun with the 4 girls following me around like shadows in case they can grab a worm as I dig. A small house is enough for 4 birds and Dobbies has the ideal one at quite a good price. the birds will cost about 19-20 pounds each depending on where you purchase them. Feed (layers pellets) costs about 7 pounds per bag of 20 kilos so really not too cost effective but worth it for the taste and the fun factor.
    I wouldn't be without mine.

My mother has had chickens for years and they're very simple to look after, but you do need to make sure they're secure from foxes.

You can get rescue chickens from battery farms who will keep laying for ages and give a good home to an otherwise knackered chook. Where are you based? Check out Hen Heaven in Sussex smiley - smiley
