I know hostas like it damp and dull but i wondered if i can actually grow them in my pond on the shelf so they will be very wet

No, they don't like having their feet in water all the time, they can be planted alongside the pond so they reflect those gorgeous long stems of flowers in the water but not actually grown in the water or on the wet shelf. I grow about 60 hostas in pots, they can actually stand getting drier than people think, they like to have some sunshine too, not complete shade.
