I've just treated myself to a berberis pow wow knowing almost nothing about it, it just looks so pretty - all yellow and prickly with the promise of berries later. If you have one please let me know where you have planted it and what it is really like. I do get tempted by plants at the garden centre in spite of the list I take with me of what my garden really needs. Thank you.
Doesn't anybody have one of these.
I have a berberis although I don't know what sort as I inherited it with the garden. It's about 7 feet tall by 5 wide and as tough as old boots. I have hacked it back many times over the years and it just keeps coming back. No feeding, mulching or watering, although I would imagine the roots go pretty deep. Bees and hoverflies love the egg-yolk yellow flowers but I can't say I notice the berries.
It's difficult to prune as the leaves are extremely sharp - I have taken the hedge-trimmer to it on occasion! A tip which I discovered the hard way: prune immediately after flowering and then leave well alone. If you prune too late in the year you will deplete the amount of flowers you get the following season.
Should also have said it's in full sun most of the day on clayish soil.
Thank you. I think the Pow Wow is supposed to be a small one but time will tell.
I've also got a berberis but don't know which sort. It's tough as old boots. We transplanted it last year, unavoidably damaging the roots, thought it was dead but it revived. At the moment it has deep red leaves which look stunning. It's in full sun in clay soil and seems to love it.
Hi DD, I've just 'googled' it & yes it's a smallish one, deciduous & probably like all berberis as tough as old boots. In my experience they cope with sun, shade & most soil conditions. J.
Thank you everybody.
