It's bitterly cold here in north-west Suffolk in my little frost-pocket. It says it's 6.5C on the thermometer, but it's lying. The wind chill factor must be very low - I had a sudden panic and decided to plant out a dwarf rosy buckler fern that I had in a pot. It only took 5 mins to pop it in the ground, and I was wearing gloves and a jacket, but it took 10 mins to thaw my hands out afterwards.
It's been mostly damp, overcast and very windy here in Lancs
I long for the frosty, yet dry and sunny days, of winter so I can get wrapped up and go for a walk or do a spot of tidying in my garden!
Wind, sun & rain on & off here in Manchester.
Was cutting back dead herbaceous but didn't fancy getting soaked. Baking Dad a birthday cake now so warmed up.J.
Its that very fine showery rain here in france, dept 23 limousin,
The sort of day you let the chickend out and light the log fire and have a nice afternoon on the P.C looking at gardening forums.
Oh almost forgot "and a nice cuppa in hand"
Quite cold here this morning, -8C and with enough of a mild wind for colder wind chill. Still some snow around from what we got a day or so ago. Weekend expected to continue cold, with Sunday looking the most promising, relatively speaking, with some sun forecasted and a "high" of 1C.

5 degrees C here in Hertfordshire with a cold breeze. Just back from a garden where we've had a large delivery for planting out next week. I've covered the more vulnerable plants with hessian as we are expecting severe frost and snow. Catching up with emails with, like Jansee, a hot cuppa in hand.
flippin cold in cumbria
It's a beautiful sunny day here in the Alpes Maritimes (S France) but with a definite nip in the air and some parts are quite frosty in the mornings. I would settle down in front of the log fire but it's parents night so I'm going to be stuck at the school for most of the evening.....
Wet, cold, arctic blasts here in Cannock Chase. Light beginning to fade - will be starting my open fires season here this weekend - luvvly jubbly. (The downside is the carrying of coal from outside, cleaning out the fire, re-laying it, getting mucky, etc).
However, it's still the most rewarding, satisfying thing to do on a winter's day!

I'm sorry to say I've no idea what the weather is like outside but according to my thermometer I have outside temp is 10c so that must be lieing, it's gone really dark here in Doncaster hmm looks like it def going to snow!
It's not been too bad at all here today (Boston, Lincs).
Sunny and dry most of the day but raining now I notice, and it was very windy overnight, but no damage in the garden.
Temperature-wise it was probably around 8C/46F this morning.
Just got back from taking the dog out - for a VERY short walk, I don't know who was more glad to get back indoors, me or her. We are in Essex and it is FFFFFFFFreezing. Nan x
Hail!

Willing to trade you my -8C for your 8C if you're interested, Spruance. I mean "8" for "8" is fair, ain't it?
Down to 4C at 4pm, not looking too hopeful then. The weather lot get it wrong so often that I live in hope of them getting it wrong when it comes to snow! The sleet we had didn't last long, I think it's saving itself for the big push.
Lovely day here in the East Midlands - mostly sunny with strong, cool, wind. Just mowed the lawn for the last time (I hope) & watched the sky turn vivid scarlet shortly after.
Bloomin' cold in Kiddy(Kidderminster for those non-midlands folk!) Can hear it raining now & have to take Barney soon - oh well wet jeans bottoms again!

Has far as I know seeing curtains now closed it's dark and gone down to 8c
Doncaster.
Hi mommydoos, thats Telford isn't it Kidderminster?
Soon I'll be in Telford end of the month till end of March 2009 yay-hay.
Poor Nooj - hail. It's been a fine day here, in this bit of West Yorks, just a bit along the Aire Valley from you, I think. Very cold, best temp said 4 degrees, now down to 0.4.
I have a compost heap rotted down and waiting to go on the borders, but have delayed putting it on because of the thought of frozen worms. Silly, really, when the birds will probably get them anyway, when I do spread it.
Have got the bird feeders up, some windfall apples on the ground, given the guinea pig extra hay and straw, and just crossing my fingers for the pelargoniums against the wall.
Researcher - had to go & do meal things earlier - but NO Telford is in Shropshire & Kidderminster is in Worcestershire - nothing at all in common!!
Sorry!

It's a balmy 3C here in NW Suffolk and we are supposed to have snow in a couple of hours. It's bitterly cold and very windy and even going out to the bins entails putting a coat and gloves on.
Really cold here in Staffs but beautifully sunny and not very windy! Definately tights under trousers weather! (I am also sporting a rather lovely thermal vest under my jumper!)

It's bitterly cold in the South East (North of London) No rain or snow but very very cold brrrrrrrrr!
We have snow - it's been snowing on and off for the past two hours (it's 10.30am now) and is beginning to settle.
[IMG]/IMG]
The temp. went down to -3.1 last niht, and it's
-0.5 now.
It is nasty here in SE London, there was a small dusting of snow, which has now been replaced by rain.
Sara
I know, my sister is about to leave you to come up to me! Her name is Sara too. She has this to look forward too, and it's getting worse
[IMG]/IMG]
It's snowing near Paris It started five or ten minutes ago and is becoming quite heavy but not enough to stay on the ground yet - I love snow. Your garden looks lovely in white janerowena. Safe journey though to everyone who has a wintry drive.
There seems to be a few Sara's about proper Sara's and not pretend Sarah's.
Now have blue skies and sunshine and not too cold either!
Sara
My Sara is nearly 50 and had huge problems with her name when she was younger. Her first teacher when she was only 5 insisted on calling her Sarah, which upset her hugely. Her very elderly teacher said that Sara was a heathen name! We asked my mother, who said that is was the name of an Egyptian princess. I suppose it was the Egyptian pronunciation of the hebrew Sarah.
ooops. I'm on the wrong thread. It's still snowing here! (12.45) The garden looks very pretty but I need to go out to empty the bin and stuff and I keep on putting it off.
The snow lasted five minutes before turning to rain and wind. I just had long enough to email my family in Scotland with the exciting news. Never mind, it's blustery and wet outside but cosy looking out.

Spoke to my mum in South Lincs about an hour ago and they have 3 inches of snow and it's still falling.
Here in Wilts we had torrential rain all morning and then the sun came out. The rain clouds are just working their way back into the sky again now.
Rach
It has been cold, crisp and clear here in my bit of W Yorks, but just starting to cloud over. We were forecast some snow, but nothing has appeared - probably cos temp around 5, (but starting to drop now). OH wanted to go out and look at possible cars (our P reg estate is brilliant, but basically on its last legs), but I've persuaded him to come for a walk instead, as soon as he's washed the footie mud off - he was out for hours, managing/training one team and refereeing another today.
There's a line of shirts, blowin' in the wind outside. Maybe I'd better get them in before I go for the walk; wouldn't want them to be literally snowy white.
Here in Loire Atlantique it's 7 degrees, but there's a fierce nw wind so feels very cold, the trees are thrashing about and the wind is howling round the chimneys. Would love some prettty snow!
Call that snow, JRo? I spit on your snow...but for once you HAVE got more than me!
Today (Cantal, France) we woke to sunny, sparkly frostiness. Then it clouded over and we had snow and sleet which started to settle. Now it's got warmer (relatively!)and has turned to rain.
Its been Snowing here in the north east to-day and quite a few other places I gather.

It is now seriously snowing since this afternoon, and although it is not freezing it is so much it stays. On the roof of the shed in a layer of 15 cm. My children (oldest is 9) have never seen so much snow. I promissed them to bring them to school tommorow by slede. Im in Almere, The Netherlands, a bit south east of Amsterdam.
Hate to think about my paksoi en sprouts out there. Mo.
As a thought very cold is only relative to previous weather conditions. I would not say that it is very cold at present.
Very cold is when for days or even weeks the water on the pond is covered with at least six inches of ice, the frost penetrates the soil so deep and makes it so hard that a spade or fork cannot make any impression to try and dig up winter roots, the water in the watering can inside the GH freezes solid, washing freezes solid as soon as it is hung on the line and does not thaw out all day long. This was very common when I was much younger.
Today here in S E Wales there have been heavy showers but equally quite a lot of sun so not such a bad day as I did get some tidying up done around the pond.
Here, west of the Pennines we seem to have escaped the snow. Heavy hail earlier, sharp cold showers and a biting wind (especially when standing around in it outside singing carols, as I was this afternoon!). But no lying snow and temps just above 0C
Sorry to say its has been a beautiful bright sunny calm day here in the Algarve probably about 17 degrees, no use to you though eh, just to let you know how we ex pats are coping with the oncomming winter.
Yes, my mother emailed earlier to say she's enjoying t-shirt weather in the Algarve - and had the temerity to ask how we are. With four layers, lecky blanket, thermal undies and two pairs of socks I'm proably about as warm as she is. (Builders are in, gaping holes in the walls, no kitchen and a boiler on the blink). It can only get better from here......
Got an idea, maybe you could go visit your mother, i got toms flowering in the greenhouse and chillis setting good fruits, lettuces on the go and lemon grass in flower... what can you say?
Well, we woke up to a chilly surprise this morning - a 2" layer of snow!! It started to melt a bit once the sun came up but is still hanging around. The temp has only managed a measly 3 deg so far. Brrr!
I know 2" sounds a bit feeble - especially to a Scot like me, so I should point out (for anyone that doesn't know me) that I live in the far South of France - close to Nice - so it's pretty unusual!!
