Ay up everyone.
Erm... What's your stance on mounds?!
I have this shady corner in my garden (and I mean shade ALL day ) where the garage and fence meet and I've just bought a 1.5ft aucoba japonica to try to brighten it up a little.
Only trouble is, living in an impatient household, the aucoba looks quite titchy at the mo and the ugly fence and ugly garage look hoooge.
And I'm thinking....what if I made a mound about 1ft high and planted the shrub on it? That would lift it up a bit.
But then I thought if that was a good idea then everybody would do it so surely there must be some fundamental flaw to my wicked plan.
Any thoughts??
Hope everyone's having a wonderful weekend by the way!
One problem would be that the mound would dry out very quickly so the plant would not thrive, so I'm afraid cheating will lead to a dead plant....
How about initially planting it in a large pot? that would raise it up a bit and you could plant it properly later when its scale is more in keeping with the site , just a thought.
Ay up everyone.

Aha! Yes, I can see how the prospect of a dead plant might put me off the mound idea. Good call supermum!
Jank, you genius!
ishly simple yet effective.
Following your advice, I've just been to a car boot sale and picked up a big green pot that will be perfect for my shady green woodland. And while there I found an old green wooden railway sign with 'Brunel' written on it that I can have peeking out from the undergrowth. V v cool as it's his birthday this year. (I'm not a trainspotter; it's just that I live in Bristol.)
Yippee!
never been called a genius before, careful youll have my head swelling!

So let it swell! Go on, live a little.
Let your hair down, let yourself go and let your head swell like that water retentive gel stuff. Knock yourself out!
Actually, erm...All the above suddenly sounds rather dangerous.
Hmm. Jank. I'm afraid to say you are no longer a genius. If the swelling hasn't subsided in a few days I suggest you consult a doctor.
PS. Definitely don't knock yourself out.
Dont worry the slight haematoma caused by your kind comments dissppeared when I went in my greenhouse and saw my cat had been shut in there and had upset 2 of my seedtrays all over the floor, genius?....not really.
