Hello, I am new to these boards. I have just recently had my garden stoned. I am going to plant in containers but I was wondering what type of plants/shrubs, if any, would grow amongst the stones themselves? I have clay soil. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you want to plant up this area try some alchemilla mollis it looks nice in gravel or some euphorbia. Have a look at Beth Chatto's gravel garden that should give you some nice ideas.
Is there a menbrane laid underneath? Nothing will grow in pure gravel, you do need a bit of soil.
If you are going to grow direct into the gravel then the many species and cultivars of grasses will do fine in that sort of area, some of them come from desert areas and will do well in the gravel.

Tell that to the weeds growing in our paths.
Any silver leafed shrubs like the heat reflected from stones.
Thanks for your replies. Yes, my garden has a membrane but I meant to say planting in the soil with a hole in the plastic sheeting. Can plants/shrubs grow like this being surrounded by stones?
We have some black grass in our garden; sorry I don't know its Latin name, I imagine that would look good against a gravel background. The grass is quite expensive but it does spread; it has pretty pink flowers.
Have fun with your planting!!
Just cut a cross or T shape in the membrane plant your plant replace the membrane and the stones around the top of the plants.
