    Hi,
I was browsing in the garden centre today and decided to buy two new shrubs for the back of my new border. These were a Forsythia and Magnolia 'Susan'. I also bought three Euphorbia Purpurea plants aswell.
It would be great if i could get some advice on each plant, with some do's and donts thrown in. Any help would be appreciated as this is my first large border design.

    Thanks

    Hi

I hate Euphorbia as one of them put my mum in hospital a while back. They have very sticky, milky sap which, if it gets on your skin or (as in my mum's case) in your eyes, it can be a horrendous irritant (she was in pain for days and had to have eye drops applied 6 times a day for about 3 weeks). I suggest you always use a pair of gloves and goggles when you weed around it, just in case.

Sorry, can't help much as I have alkaline soil so can't do magnolias and I don't like euphorbias. I do however know that they are an irritant if you get the sap on your skin/eyes/whatever and then are exposed to sunlight. It burns. No problem as long as you are aware and take care to protect yourself with gloves when pruning etc..

I'm with the others on Euphorbias - can't see the point of them and the irritant sap makes them a no-no for me.

The magnolia will need a neutral to acid soil and protection from the wind.

    Forsythia will grow virtually anywhere.

Thanks Obelix and others. I have a new born baby who in a year or two might be touching or eating the euphorbias. I'd better get rid of them. I also have a alkaline/neutral soil so better get some ericacoius to plant around the Magnolia.

Thanks for all you help !
