Just been out buying climbers for the walls and fences. Bought lonicera japonica Halliana - should have taken cuttings from Wales two years ago but this one looks big and healthy, and Clematis armandii Apple Blossom - evergreen - for the fence (its a big sturdy fence!), and Schizophragma Hydrangeoides "Moonlight". Now this last one I was sure was hydrangea anomala petiolaris - it looked identical, the label described it as preferring a north wall, self clinging etc., but this particular cultivar has silvery blue marbling on the leaves - a bit different from the one at my old house, so I couldn't resist. i assumed the powers that be had decided to rename Hydrangea anomala Petiolaris as it is a bit different to all the other hydrangeas, but when I got home I found out that it is an entirely different species / cultivar, though it is very similar in lots of ways. I had never heard of it. Anyone got any first hand experience of it?
Yes I have, there is one growing up a south facing wall in the garden where I work, maybe this is why it looks so flippin miserable. I have seen some pictures of it looking lovely, meybe I should propagate some and plant elsewhere. Thanks for that.
PS You would have thought that very expensive garden designers would know better
I used one for the garden at GOTY, it had a fence that never had sun so decided it would be the best thing for it. Came highly recommended from GC, who happen to know a bit about their plants for a change !!
