Winter flowering Pansies are dreadful. They are the furry dice of gardening. The only place they are welcome in my garden is in the darkest part of my compost bin. If you grow them, I recommend a quick weed out now before someone sees you with them.
Surely you feel the same?

Not everyone enjoys bedding plants, I know a woman who squirms at the sight or thought of rows of bright coloured plants. However for me the range of colours, their happy faces and easy going nature of enjoying some shade make them a good choice for pots containers. I have had two pots with pale lemon flowers in bloom all winter, sunny for part of the day in deep well drained compost. Job done?

Why should everyone hate pansies? Have you had a bad experience of them

I like them, I've got 2 pots of the outside at the moment and the look absolutely beautiful!

To be perfectly honest, I appreciate everything that grows in the garden. Every single one of them is a miracle of nature.

You now know two women who feel like that

Sure do agree with you Copywrite.
Here in the The Netherlands the GC's are full of them during autumn and they do precisely nothing all winter. Expensive fodder for the compost bin, in my opinion. Far better to concentrate on heathers, ivy and skimmias to fill pots for a bit of winter interest and wait for the magnificent displays of spring varieties.

I think it is all about context ... pansies can look fine in hanging baskets or window boxes, when all else is bare, they provide cheerful colour. Sure they are not the only winter 'doers' but have a role to play. I think they go nicely with cyclamen.
The bedding I really don't like is the bright multi-coloured primroses (not the lovely pale yellow ones which I like).

I just hate busy lizzies when you see whole gardens and pots and hanging baskets full of them. Shows such a lack of imagination.

I had a policy decision last year - no buzy lizzies at all!!! Was proud of myself and thought I had 'grown up' as a gardener!!!!

Well done LS, you should be proud of yourself

They might not be incredibly beautiful plants but I find them useful and pretty. I've had two hanging baskets of dark purple winter pansies outside my house since November - they are still doing well and looking cheerful. As for bedding plants generally? No thanks!!!

Well, busy lizzies keep me in a job!
The two front gardens either side of me are appalling. Full of weeds and not much else. Surely that is lack of imagination, together with laziness and I would much rather see it full of bedding plants than weeds!

Pansies wouldn't be my first choice, but I have to confess to having got some this year. Mainly because I dug some new beds which were completely empty and bare. I wanted something cheap and colourful that I could just shove in the ground and then turf out into the compost bin once its time for the plants I actually want in there.

Pansies are nice if planted thoughtfully with regard to colour.
What I detest is multicoloured packs of pansies (and primulas - in fact even more so), bunged into a bed, basket or container with no thought whatsoever to colour co-ordination!

I know what you're saying Slugger but, about 95% of our customers don't give a second thought about colour co-ordination, they just want colour! Surely any colour is better than no colour?! At least these folk are making an effort with their gardens which is more than I can say for some!

If it keeps you in food, shelter and plants then there must be some good in it then!

A hundred times worse than pansies

Sorry, finger hit 'post' before I'd identified you Lord Steve. They are ghastly and last about 5 mins in the garden.
