Hi Plocket, just wanted to say your website looks great, love your paintings too!
Can you tell me what if there is a clematis that will grow on north facing fence? I must admit I don't seem to be too lucky with clematis, I have tried two Seiboldi and both have flowered when I put them in, but then died. They were in an island bed climbing up an obelisk, the bed is in full sun (probably totally the wrong place!)

Sorry Tibouchina2 I've only just found your message. And thank you for your lovely comments about my website.

I think part of the problem with Sieboldii is that they are fairly tender and need to be very sheltered over winter if they are to stay outside. I have mine in a pot which I cover with a large plastic cloche over winter, which does the job. They do also want full sun so you did that bit right! If you really are that keen on Sieboldii in particular then try one again, but in a large container - I've put information about growing in pots on my website. I start to protect mine when the temperature gets to about zero so prune it a bit and cover it then.

As for a clematis for a north facing fence, give me an idea of what colour you like and I'll try and find a few for you! Many clematis can cope with shade so it shouldn't be too difficult. Just don't tell me you want orange flowers!!!

Hi Plocket. I really like Sieboldi so will give that another try, probably better to put that in a pot, and then as you suggest I can cover it or move it into the greenhouse in the winter.

Colour wise, I think pink or cream, I really like 'Nelly Moser' how would that go? Thanks for your help!

    Hi Tibouchina2!

Nelly can cope with any aspect so would be fine for your north facing fence. And good luck with the Sieboldii - they really are worth a bit of effort. Let me know if I can help any more.

It's a great website Plocket, nice and easy to navigate. I'm in the midst of trying to create a website for the nursery I am establishing this summer it's been nearly as trying as finding a suitable plot! smiley - grr

I will do, I have found my plot in the end we took on a smallholding with just under a hundred acres, this will give me the land and scope to create show gardens have a well stocked nursery and in time a tea room. We also have enough room for me to try my hand at development of some new penstemons (I have a particular interest in cottage garden plants)
With the rest of the land the oh is going to open a livery yard as she graduates from uni this summer as well.
The only problem is getting the site cleared etc is going to take sometime.

Budding sounds great, we're thinking of doing the same with the nursery side of things, just got to get motivated and sort the garden out, so I will have time to grow some plants, I'm getting a bit fed up of all the GC's having all the same plants, there is nothing special any more.

    Good luck !

I know it's a long way from Wales but if anyone else is in the vicinity, there's a plant sale at the Marks Hall estate at Coggeshall in Essex on 30 April. It says in GW that it's a sale of unusual plants you don't often see at a GC. I'm going to give it a look. You never know what you might turn up....!

    Cheers

Thanks supermum, I'm with you on all the garden centres having the same stock, which is part of the reason it will be nice to have something a little different to offer. Plus to compete with all the diy centre and gc that sell plants grown on the cheap in europe, you have to offer something a little different to stay in business!
