Could anyone please help me? I have recently moved into a 7 yr old home with an established garden, which I hated, and have proceeded to wreck it with a lot of help from my husband! We must have committed every sin in the Gardening Bible and what was an uninspiring, overgrown and neglected garden is now a total mess. The soil, if you can call it that, is clay based. What I really need is a link to a garden design service in South Wales (near Caerphilly) who will take a look, design something taking the soil and my limited budget into account and leave me to do my worst. Is there anyone out there who could get me pointed in the right direction?

You could check the yellow pages, but you're skipping all the fun bits of gardening .....

Thanks William, I have already tried the yellow pages but they aren't very helpful as the only people advertising seem to want to come in, drain the garden, remove clay, deliver new soil and then start with water features, patios, etc... I had hoped for someone who would give me an idea of what to plant and where to plant it without digging up the whole garden - messy and expensive. Cheap fix is what I'm after.

Hi,
If you are near Caerphilly try Caerphilly Garden Centre ( then click Landscaping on the left panel. They are willing to come and peer at your garden and give ideas or advice. Not sure on cost though. The restaurant is nice as well.

Are there any adverts in the local shopspapers for landscape gardeners or gardeners? You might be lucky and find someone prepared to listen to your wishes, discuss options and provide a solution and then offer to do it for you - at a cost obviously.

Hi Alan
If there are any very nice gardens near where you live, knock on the door show interest tell them about your dilemma. Most gardening enthousiasts would be very willing to share their knowledge, have a look at your garden, talk about their hobby (without ever being able to stop them) et cetera.

Got to say, I would take up the challenge yourself. If youv'e wrecked it, you will take great satisfaction in rebuilding it.
Rather than invest in landscapers, buy a couple of good garden design books instead, its much cheaper (or better still get them from the library).
Take pictures and it will continuously inspire you when you can monitor your progress.
Go for it!!

I agree Potbound, although whenever I move house I always wait for some months too see what's what before trashing the garden (had some lovely suprises that way too).
Landscape/garden design, done properly is not cheap and I'd rather spend the money on plants.

Hi, I live nearby if you send me some photos I could see if I can give you some starters.
If you go to my website, there is an email link (comments & questions) and I'll let everybody know what a mess you've made !!!!! Not really....
I've been to Caerphilly GC, food was good but not over impressed with GC, although did get some giant lily bulbs which were really good value...
Whoops best give you website address:

Hiya
Why not give Pughs GC in Morganstown a ring. It's just off the A470 one junction down from the Nantgarw junction. If they can't help, they may know someone who can. There was an advert in our local newsagent that may be along the right lines. I'll see if it's still there tomorrow.
