We have a backyard that is currently completely open to the back lane (last owners of our house used it to park their car).
Yard keeps getting bombarded with rubbish, kids' footballs etc, and feels a bit exposed to the back lane.
We don't drive, but we don't want to put a fence or wall across because when we sell the house we want to advertise it as having parking space.
I thought it might be nice to have a couple of bushy shrubs in big containers to create a bit of a barrier. I'm after suggestions for things that are either fast growing or can be bought quite big for not much money (I don't want to spend a lot in case they get nicked), and also suggestions for what types of containers would be suitable (and also not too pricey)
Any ideas?
I'd go for things like pyracantha & rosa rugosa - largish, fast-growing, & also very prickly, which should go some way to deterring vandals/plant thieves. I don't think it matters what containers you use, so long as they are big enough. Most large sized pots or planters are quite expensive though - how about buying some tub trugs, making holes in the bottom of them for drainage, & using these? - they will work out much cheaper for the size, & look reasonable too.
There are some on here (to give you an idea of what I mean): though I think I saw some much bigger ones in Homebase the other day which were about £6 or £7.
Just opened my post - a new Wiggly Wigglers catalogue - & they have them too, in green, black, or ice cream colours:
