Hi - my new garden has an area thats on a very steep slope. Its limey, but the soil is a very heavy silty loam (not clay). Just after rain its very heavy indeed, but drains fast because of the slope. Its also windy and very sunny.

I know which shrubs and grasses to go for, but I'm struggling a bit for perennials and they're so expensive i don't want to buy a load of plants just so I can watch them shrivel. You can't get a hosepipe to the area and only limited digging in of organic stuff can be done so I really have to accept what I have and plant accordingly. Bergenia seem to love it, but the only other things growing are laurel, ivy and berberis.

Can any kind soul put me out of my misery by offering advice? I intend to have a punt with acanthus, heuchera, short perennial verbascums and some geranium, but I'm too scared to try much else.

Oh - I can't go for anything that might rot off easily cos the soil is evidently sometimes too heavy, but anything that wants more than a sip or two of rain wilts.
