Yippee! I've just found some buds on the clematis that escaped from hanging baskets and into my new front bed. They're popping up from below ground as it's been so cold there's just sticks left above. Shan't prune the sticks off just yet though as I don't want to frighten them.

In a day or so I shall be brave and inspect the growth (damage) on Arabella in the other front bed and all the others round the back and side.

I always forget that your spring is slightly behind ours Obelixx (thank you for your lovely PM btw). I've had a good look at my clems today and of course there are still some which look rather dead. It is lovely when you start seeing the new growth though isn't it?

Hi Plocket - I've been brave and gone out the back to see what's occurring.

There are buds on Arabella, Cicciolina, Markham's Pink, Purpurea Plena, Beauty of Worcester, Etoile Violette, Dr Ruppel, Purple Spider, a blue alpina with the label long gone and The President.

Niobe looks to be a goner, as does Orange Peel and there's too much cirhhosa to see what the deep red at the front is doing. No sign of Multi Blue either.

Win some, lose some. I shall have to send an email to my hero asking for more sturdy varieties that can cope with -25C.

Oh it's such a shame that you've lost some. I'm always heartbroken when I lose a plant. Mind you your conditions are more extreme than over here. At least you can have a chat with "your man" and see what he has to offer. I had a look at his site btw - it's lovely, although I couldn't get some of the pages in English, but that's not a problem for his clients of course. I've got a short list, which I need to edit some more, of clems that I want from Sheila Chapman and I'll probably arrange to collect them from her at Gardeners' World this year. Hope your weather continues to improve.

Chuffed to bits - managed to get two cuttings of Armandii to take. One has a big long shoot on it (well ok, it's about 25cm long!), and the others got a lovely healthy set of roots on it. Free plants are always welcome!

Just found Markham's Pink in the book while checking my spellings - looks like a beauty. You've certainly got quite a collection. . . smiley - biggrin

Hi PLocket - There are three more I need to check. One is Red Baron which looked dead till mid May last year then decided to grow after all and a deep purple and pale lilac one I've planted together but can't find the labels. They were transplanted to a new place last autumn so may be sulking. Two of the integrifolias are not yet showing signs of life either. Just have to wait and see.

I am looking forward to a meet with Clematis Man and am now very careful to check the labels for the all important -25C hardiness but the wind chill still gets some.

On the other hand, it's been such a dry winter that some variegated euonymus cuttings I was given rooted have survived and even thrived. In wet winters they go black and die.

PS - Whereabouts is Sheila Chapman - just in case I'm ever in the neighbourhood?

HI Mrs Gumboot - I like Armandii but it won't do in my garden. Too nippy. My Mrs Markham was new last year and has come through a summer drought and a very cold, dry winter apart from some long lasting snowfalls. She's a good 'un.

Hi Obelixx. Sheila's office is in Chelmsford but in her brochure the nursery says "c/o Crowther Nurseries, Ongar Road, Abridge, Essex - also the home of the Â鶹Éç Essex Garden". I've never been as it's a bit far from me but if you ever go do let me know what it's like.

Good luck with the rest of your clems, and of course finding more from your clematis man.

I've just been checking my clems that I pruned some time ago and there is lots fo new growth on them no buds though. There are loads of buds on my willows though delighted about that as I pruned that at the same time as my clems.

Hi Plocket. Unfortunately Essex is well off my beaten track so I'll have to make to with Clematis Man.

Clondalkin - how do yo get growth without buds? All I've got is buds on sticks.
