We're going on holiday shortly & will be staying near Pershore, which is near Worcester ... anyone know any nice gardens in the area? We don't like very formal gardens much - we prefer woodland & cottage styles. We're members of the National Trust so will visit any of their gardens we haven't already been to, so no need to mention them!

Juliet - It's some time since I frequented the area, but here's what I recall (I don't know which are NT).

There's Hanbury Hall near Droitwich, which was OK from recollection. The other side of Evesham is Hidcote and next door to it is Kiftsgate, both of which are good.

Nearby at Bretforton is a must visit NT property - a pub! It's called The Fleece and until the 1980's it was run by a pair of eccentric old ladies. No crisps, no fruit machines, jukebox etc. I'm not certain they even serve lager (did do Perry mind you). It won the Good Pub Guide's highest honours in the early 1990's. They did do food.

On the road to Cheltenham is Batsford Aboretum, which is worth a visit.

Finally, one that is NT, I haven't been to, but is on my list is Croome (typo?) thingymebob (near Severn Stoke). I think this is were it all started for Capability Brown. The NT are restoring it (they might have finished by now). smiley - biggrin

Pershore college gardens if they are open.

    Hampton Court - Hope-under-dinmore, Leominster
    Hanbury Hall - Droitwich, Worcs
    Spetchley Park - nr Worcester
Stone House Cottage - Stone, nr Kiderminster
Witley Court - Great Witley, nr Worcester

Juliet - Do not go to Burford! It hosts a collection of those horrible climbing things Plocket goes on and on and on about... and you will not come home empty handed smiley - biggrin

And if you want some HRT or just a wander around a GC there's always Webbs of Wychbold near Bromsgrove although I understand from my MIL that they are expanding some bits so everything is in a bit of a mess at the moment.

Thanks folks, I'll look up the ones we haven't already been to - had a holiday on the Shropshire/Herefordshire border last year so we visited some of those then (loved Witley Court). Might go back to Batsford - we went a few years ago & loved that too. We're not planning to go to Burford though because my parents went last year & hated it - they said it's just an extended garden centre; everything has a price tag. So no clematis buying this holiday (actually I'm not a great clematis fan so it's not that difficult for me to resist them - shh - don't tell Plocket smiley - biggrin)!
