I want to cover the lawn in my back garden with pea gravel or similar for low maintenance, and would like advice on how to go about it, i am going to liven it up with boulders and pots but would appreciate any ideas any body might have, the area i hope to cover is about 5 square meters
    Thanks

    Hi,

I would strongly consider hiring a turf cutter and this will take away hours of backbreaking work, removing the turf with a spade. I have tried it the hard way twice before and never again. When you have removed the lawn, try to roughly level it out with soil and cover the area with a weed suppressing membrane (Weed Fabric / Mypex for example) and secure with plastic pegs. You can then put the gravel down. Buying from a buiders yard in 1 tonne bags will work out much cheaper than buying 25Kg bags form your local garden centre. In terms of planting, it really depends upon the 'look' you are wishing to create and the amount of time you have to spend on your garden. Other points to consider is the amount of sun the area receives, is the garden exposed or sheltered? are you able to water the plants regularly in pots? and are you looking for year round interest (evergreens) or just to use the space in spring and summer?

Just a wee warning about small gravel/chips etc, if you have cats they will think you just made them the biggest ever litter tray. Slightly larger sizes that aren't so easy for them to dig are worth considering if there are moggies about.
