Hi everyone Im looking for inspiration. I have read the articles and watched the tv programmes and dear alan suggesting that you must have a journey through your garden.
My garden is approx 40ft square. A tatty circular lawn about 16ft radius (Im sure this will be beautiful once I have taken the advice other members gave me on board.) Its doesn't seem big enough break into different rooms as often suggested. You take all of the garden in just one quick look which at the moment is pretty grim, although I have a lot of plants in the borders just waiting (hopefully) to come to life

I'm useless at design, but am pinging this up to the top as I know we have excellent designers who would be able to help you.
All I know is you need a variation of height

How about a weeping willow in the centre of the lawn. Kilmarnock is a good one as it is a small willow.
For wall cover Ivys, Honeysuckle, and Clematis of course.
Fus*hia of all descriptions and sizes including ones that are small enough to grow in pots.
a patio area too it doesn't have to be beside the house as mine is near the end of the garden sunny most of the day and evening. Hope this gives you some ideas smiley - rosesmiley - rose

    Hi, Abbeylane.

You could forget the lawn for the time being, and consider dividing into 4-'rooms', each about 20' square - you can do quite a bit with one garden of that size, so think of the scope with four !

Alternatively, you could divide into four diagonally, giving you four triangular 'rooms' - or you could just divide into two diagonally, choosing the diagonal which would give the best light to both according to your aspect.

The divisions don't have to be straight, in fact the single diagonal approach could just as easily be S-shaped or a reversed 'S'.

Probably best to think in terms of hedging for the dividers, rather than something hard like a fence - trellis could be used, softened by climbers etc, but it is less suitable than hedging for a curved line.

Hope this helps, or at least generates some lateral thinking.

Good luck & kindest regards, Indeedee.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I like the idea of making the garden into four triangular rooms but Im not sure whether I am brave enough to dig up all of the lawn. The soil is basically clay so it would be really hard going. If I put a small tree in the centre of the lawn that would give some height and maybe a bit more privacy from the house which backs on to mine. Anyway you have given me some great ideas to play with. I was trying to work around the circle but perhaps I need to get away from this. The garden faces West which leaves one side in the shade but its not too bad. Thanks again for your help I'll play around with my pencil and paper and see what I come up with.
