Hi there,
I thought I'd take this chance to shamelessly plug (if the Â鶹Éç will let me) a book by my PhD supervisor.
Might be enjoyable to any philosophically minded gardeners out there.
Liz x
Ping!
(yes I'm shameless)

Hi LD - aka shameless- had a look - seems quite interesting - but......... decided several years ago it was better for me not to analyse things I enjoy because I reduce them to nothing ( hard to explain!!) so, when I discovered a love of gardening, a few years ago, I decided never to analyse it - just enjoy it! But - may look out for the book or put it on my birthday present list ( on the off chance someone asks what I want!!!!)
Happy studying - PA
That sounds fair enough. Gardening is turning out to be my escape from thinking about things too much so I quite understand

Hi LD - What exactly are you studying - gardening related presumably ?
Ragards - PA
Nope. Completely new to gardening, I'd be a dead loss at that at the moment.
I'm doing a PhD in philosophy- moral rights and the environment.

Oh - reminds me of when I was into nuclear physics and OH told me not to talk about it at dinner parties - don't know much about philosophy - what draws you to the gardening thread - are you getting into gardening?
Don't be offended - I am just interested.
Regards - PA
No offence
Yeah, OH and I bought our first home in the summer so its the first real chance I've had to get into gardening. We've only got a small garden, but I'm really excited about it.
I'm finding the message boards totally invaluable, so much good advice.
...with a little bit of insanity thrown in from time to time.<
Hi - LD - I too have a small garden but have probably 200 plants crammed in - it is amazing what you can do - even in pots!!! Good luck with your garden and - as SS says - keep a balance!!!!!!
Regards - PA
Thanks PA. I think I'm going to have a massive number of plants crammed in too- I seem to have started buying seeds compulsively. Bit worrying

Hi LD - not worrying - perfectly normal but then you need lots of time to sow, prick out, pot on - and lots of compost - and lots of pots - and lots of indoor, coldframe, greenhouse space for the pots - but the rewards are wonderful - enjoy!!!! -PA
Hee hee! No greenhouse or coldframe, ao there are pots EVERYWHERE. Its driving OH mad, because every windowsill in our tiny house is crammed.
I'm going to ask my mum for a coldframe/mini greenhouse (can't decide which yet) for my birthday. Thats May 19th, so too late to be much use by then, but I'll have it for the autumn.

Hi LD - got a cold frame for christmas - sweet peas doing well in there - salvaged mini green house from friend - bits missing - see LL/PA sweet pea thread - circa post 580???ish - not sure which will prove most useful!!! But now I have both!!! Professional or what!!!!
Happy gardening - PA
PS Mini greenhouses are cheaper but someone else might point out the merits / downside of each!!
Thanks. Might start a thread on that closer to the time.

Hi LD - have filled my mini greenhouse today with over wintered things like bananas, more sweet peas, various cuttings etc to make room for more props and seed growing in consevatory. Have you posted yet re pros and cons re cold frame, plastic green house - let me know - would love to know what people think.
Happy gardening - PA

Hi - my Latin sadly stopped at Veni, Vide, Vice,(??) or some such - I came, I saw, I conquered - am I missing something really good here?
Donut brained PA
Sorry- being INCREDIBLY geeky.
Cogito ergo sum is 'I think therefore I am' (actually translates more like 'I am thinking therefore I am')
Sum res cogitans is also from Descartes (like cogito ergo sum) and translates something along the lines of 'I am a thing that thinks'.
So pingo ergo sum would mean 'I ping therefore I am' etc. (If 'ping' were in fact a latin verb)
I thought you were saying you were Pingu!

That's me to a 'T' P.A.! Shrinking violet, always quitely simmering in the background.
Actually, I can recite a bit of latin but wouldn't have a clue how to write it downius

My Latin tutor at university had a sticker on her car which read:
"Si hoc adfixum in obice legere potes, et liberaliter educatus et nimis propinquus ades".
which basically means "if you can read this bumper sticker, you are both very well educated and much too close"
I've seen various latin teachers, classicists etc. with T-shirts and stickers and other things like that. I wonder where they get them from. Perhaps they have a secret shop that the rest of us don't know about where you have to recite a long passage from Horace before you're allowed in
Aaaahhhhhhh home from home!

I garden, you garden, he/she/it gardens - I stand to be corrected !!

I thought it was a South African gardener (you have to say "amo" out aloud to get the full impact!)
Doubt it - but seeing as I can't remember it can be whatever we want it to be!

I think its "I love, you love, he/she/it loves" which is rather sweet.
Not sure, but I think it is the root of the word 'amorous', but its been quite a while since I studied any Latin. Dropped it well before GCSE, so didn't do it to much of a standard either.
Amo - is what you do to grass
Amas - is what you do to wealth
Amat - is what the cat sits on!!
Not a lot of help, really ... but of course it really is all about love!!
Do I need to declare an interest here? I studied Classics incl Philosophy at Uni!
