What plant would you choose for a special occasion. It's my friends 40th and also her wedding anniversay. I thought I would get her something for the garden instead of usual gifts.
Like myself she enjoys her garden I would like to get her something really special. Any ideas anyone please.
Hiya
When's her birthday? It's good to have something that will flower at the same time.
Cornus controversa variegata - also known as the Wedding Cake Tree. If you ever see one well grown it will knock your socks off. Have a google and see for yourself what they say about it.
It is very expensive for a decent sized one, £50+, but when I see one that is a good shape I will buy one as a pressie for OH, and give it pride of place in the centre of our new garden - that's how much I think of it.
How about 50cm standard roses which can be grown in a pot if there's no room in the garden! I know Paul Chessum Roses do a 'Life Begins At 40!' and a 'Happy Anniversay' You could even buy them pots to plant them in!

I bought my parents a gold patio rose for their golden wedding anniversary last year; also bought a nice planter and planted it for them with yellow pansies round (couldn't think of anything else which would be in flower on 23rd December!).
I think getting something like a small rose which can either be grown in a pot or planted into the garden is a good idea - then your friend can choose what she does with it (also a good idea if you don't know what soil she has). Someone once bought me a lovely camelia - I'd just finished planting my garden & didn't have space for it, & in any case I have alkaline soil - had to give it to my parents. Also, before you buy, think about the colours in your friend's garden - she may not want something which doesn't go (eg if she has a white bed and a red/orange bed she's not going to be too chuffed with a plant which has blue flowers, however special it is).
Hope you find something nice!
your responses will give me plenty to think about thankyou.
Something expensive - bamboo, acer, water lily, named rose, tree, or just something you know she's got the perfect space for.
