Evening All. What plans have you got for your garden this weekend ?

I was hoping to dig out the new front border but if it's as frosty as they forecast, I'll need a pneumatic drill to get through the turf !!

I don't know what else I'm doing yet. Mrs FA is taking the horrors, sorry I mean "darlings" to a birthday party tomorrow morning so I get a couple of hours of uninterrupted garden. I'm sure I'll find something to do !!

    Cheers
    FA

Oh dear Susie. Here's a smiley - hug to cheer you up !

I don't expect I'll get a lot done anyway. The ground has been frozen for several days and hasn't even thawed out in the sun very much. Maybe I'll just spend a couple of hours trawling through catalogues and the RHS plant encyclopedia for ideas for my new front border !

I have absolutely no plans at all for the weekend except for LP's swimming lessons and the Dreaded Weekly Shop. I've got some plants that will want to go in the ground sometime but it's too cold at the moment. Still the weather looks as though it's going to improve next week. It was -7 last night so it had better improve!!!

I know how cold it was last night. I was indulging in one of my other passions - looking at the stars through my telescope. It was so cold I only managed to stay out there for about an hour. Got an excellent view of Saturn though so it was worth it.

OH is building a new archway that is going to have lonicera Graham Thomas + a purple clem on one side & the other will have a Paul's Scarlet rose & a couple of clems ( ideas welcome please). I have some roses to put in pots. Lots to do but dependant on the weather. We may even get to shrubs direct to buy the clems ( + a few other things I might like).

I've just been looking at the who/what/why thread from a while back and I see you're from Whitby. I've got some friends who live in Brotton (near Saltburn). That's not that far from you is it ?

My cousin also lives just off the A1 near Ripon. Little village called Melmerby. That's not that far either is it ?

Saturday - Lie in - then driving lesson for No 2 son. Then empty my second lot of 20 large bags of lovely horse manure (no straw) from the van - collected today, and a third order placed for two weeks time. Then off to see daughter perform in school musical.
Sunday - lie in, another driving lesson, then chill (not the most apt choice of word at the moment!)
Monday - off to Wales in the van (weather permitting) to collect lots of plants and a petrol shredder - back Tuesday.

Where in Wales are you going ??? I think N Wales is a bit snow bound, but we're not too bad down the bottom.

I'm sure my plans will have to change for the weekend, the kids forget we have lives and are not actually a private taxi service/hotel/awful service - wish some would check out....I wouldn't stay with the service offered.

Anyway Sat: have morning to garden (dependent on weather), hopefully doing more steps..groan. Aft swimming gala for olympic hopeful number 8 (age7). Quiz evening hopefully (m'spouse is supposed to be doing the questions and hasn't finished yet as usual).

Sun: swimming again, no2 work, parish breakfast (full english etc), aft gardening, late aft swimming yet again, washing etc & get everything ready for school Monday...

Dear S-S, L.L. and mzsunny, a big smiley - hug for the workers.
F.A. and 8supermum, the lie-ins come back sooner than you wish (although not always when you want smiley - winkeye).

I have now another problem, when do I get in! smiley - winkeye I'm taxiing in the evening or waiting anxious for when they come home.

Here it is too cold to garden, and I have to get some household-jobs done as well because next week I'm abroad 2 days smiley - steam. I hate this. And earlier this week I bought 6 very nice terra cotta pots, some big ones to grow courgettes and tomatoes in later, and somesmaller ones for herbs, so in fact the March GC money is spent.
I'm still waiting for my Valentines present however. Maybe I can get OH to buy me something nice, or at least get him to camouflage the compost heap. smiley - winkeye
Good luck with the small ones FA! Enjoy!

Andy - Lucky you! - Both of mine are one month older and wiser smiley - winkeye The older one has spent 2 hours in the garden on each Sat/Sun of the past month. Then he gets cold followed by sarcastic comments from me about being a "soft southern milk drinker".

This weekend? - Friday night - Propogated from 10 surfinia's (and similar), so now how 35 plants. Got seed compost laid. Doing a mix between seed trays and 5'' pots.

Saturday - Lie in might be possible. Catch up with cricket on the way to tip. Do an hour of earthworks. Spend two hours with son digging over two more veggie beds. Propagate & sow seeds of an evening. Watch semi-finals rugby on video.

Sunday - Early kiddie start. Catch up with cricket and celebrate hopefully. Fix up yet another new mini-greenhouse (this one is designated as "Mummy's"). Go for walk with kids to visit valley spring & local allotment. Ensure vehicles are ready for next week. Do some path building. Spend a couple of hours with son in greenhouse/garden. Sow seeds. Watch footie on video and wonder where the weekend went.... smiley - biggrin

6pm Friday - take the Seedling to her father's for the weekend!

8am Saturday - wake up and look out of the window. Decide weather unfit to go to college 40 miles away, and turn over and go back to sleep.

10am - wake up again feeling refreshed and well rested. Coffee and breakfast. Stare out the window for a long while thinking how beautiful it all is. Turn on the computer.

11am - get dressed and go into the garden to take some piccies.

Rest of Saturday - struggle to get nice piccies of snow in garden onto Beeb boards!

Saturday evening - watch Christopher Dean (oops, I meant Dancing on Ice, obviously!) on the telly, then friends coming round for a bottle of wine. Bed late.

Sunday - lie in again! Mooch about a bit. Maybe go for a walk if I can think of anywhere nice to go... Do a bit of washing, and prepare for the return of the Seedling. Large snuggle, several stories. Bed.

    Sounds good to me...

    </quote>

Near Mold, but 1000ft higher and usually 2 degrees lower this time of year. Over a foot of snow and milkman can't get up the drive but it is supposed to thaw Monday. If not I will have to postpone the trip as there is no way my van will get up.

Good news is that the frost is really breaking up my clods of claggy clay soil. Been out today whacking them with the side of the spade and they are crumbling nicely.

42nd Street was a great show, though we were in the front row and No2 son who was coerced into going looked decidedly bored throughout- so much so that several of the female cast remarked on it afterwards. Still, I reckon several now fancy him. The driving lesson earlier went well except for reversing round corners - he had about 12 goes before he got the hang of it. Will try again tomorrow but perhaps not so close to our new neighburs, who must have been getting fed up!

    Hi.

I managed to get part of the new front border dug out after the ground had defrosted this morning. I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing though. The area I've cleared isn't really that big but it looks soooooooooo huge and scarily empty. Oh well, think of the fun I'll have deciding what to put in it !!

Not sure if I'll get the rest done this weekend. Mrs FA wants to take the ankle-biters out tomorrow so I may only get a couple of hours in the afternoon.

Hope your weekends are all going well. Susie, hope work wasn't too much of a bore !

Sun: swimming again, no2 work, parish breakfast (full english etc), aft gardening, late aft swimming yet again, washing etc & get everything ready for school Monday...
    Ìý

I think I did really well, my plans for the weekend nearly succeded.
Sat: went exactly to plan, number 8 came 3rd (out of 4) in her 25m race against under 9's, which for a 7 yr old is really good, were all really proud of her, and she swam 2 relay lengths.
Sun: Nearly went to plan although number 8 was sick in the night (too much fizzy and running around at quiz night I think). So no swimming, No2 got lift from someone to work, Parish breakfast lovely, no swimming at all, so full aft in garden.

We've decided to call the steps the "Stairway to heaven". (I'll try and take a photo tomorrow).

Number 5 & 6 came and helped a bit - "cos it looks easy", no 6 lasted 10 mins, but no 5 lasted an hour or so, he really enjoyed trying to dig out a massive tree stump (we didn't manage in the end). I've only about 4 or 5 more steps to do, but they rise about 10' with about 3' still to go,its about 15 steps so far.

They will be very practical, but I think they're a bit OTT so will have to disguise them a bit with planting, ohhh... a trip to the GC's.

How did everybody else's plans work out ??

    Ìý

No 8 has No 7 to play with, No 6 has No 5 to play with, No 4 and No1F go to town most days etc etc...

The more you have the easier it becomes once they get to school age.....also m'spouse is very good with the children and thinks nothing of piling no's 5 to 8 in the car and taking them to the pictures ( I can spend the afternoon in the garden!!!).
They also go to school, so can spend the day in the garden. (Because a lot of the children we foster are not at school for various reasons & it takes so long for them to get into school) we have to be at home anyway.
    Rule:
    Raining - tidy house
Not raining - in the garden.

So you've either got to have no children, or lots...

PS. they answer to their numbers too.... smiley - biggrin

Thankfully no, their spread over 3 floors with us in the middle. Its usually groans (I've disconnected the internet) or forgotten to heat their microwave bears, or "this is new simpsons, please please please"...

Mealtimes are like the Waltons, apart from the grandparents(thankgoodness). But they seem to enjoy it, especially the little ones. Although No 1 bought his girlfriend home at Xmas and she is an only child, so it was a bit of a shock for her, but she does like coming here now -for short visits.....

    Hi Andy,
Had to attend my nieces 6th birthday yesterday so no gardening to be done BUT....
Spent all today in the garden just clearing up. It has made a huge difference too.
First we (yep, OH helped, although it wasn't technically gardening) picked up all the cr@p, I was ruthless, and took it all down the dump in FIL's pick-up.
Then we started at the far end which I was going to gravel to use as a patio area but seeing as I have a problem with cats at the moment, I have decided to grass. I may get round to paving it next year.
However, we had to move 60 roof tiles (left over from the extention work 2 years ago) and a number of bricks (ditto) and came upon 6 frogs and toads which needed rounding up and re-housing first. OH wouldn't shift them so I had to (they're not my favourite things but were O.K with gloves on) and they were quite spritely for critters that are 'sposed to be dormant.
Anyway, I made them two new homes from a couple of ridge tiles so hopefully they will re-pay my efforts with slug catching in the coming year.
Just need to dig and rake and rake and errr... rake some more then we can sow the grass seed. But it's coming on and looks loads better than it did this morning.
Oh also sowed some cosmos with the little fella in the potting shed this morning and took 'The Grouchy One' (15 y/o daughter) swimming this evening.
So quite a good W/E all in all.
Hope you and yours are well.
    Regards, Skarloey.

I never got to the tip, or went for the family walk. But I did do a whole lot of digging and building pathways - not where I intended as that was frozen solid, but in my sunny veggie bit. Which is now also a fine tilth and ready!

I also found a big bucket of Spring bulbs skulking away on a top shelf and was seriously peeved. They are now planted and we'll wait and see if any flower.

My little lad helped build the mini-greenhouse, sow 18 packets of seed, propogate cuttings, pot up 25 new strawbs, transplant a dozen or raspberries, move his & mine wheelbarrows and loads of other stuff. Bliss! By 2009 I reckon I can have the year off!

Last Autumn I felt somewhat stressed as I seemed to be very much behind everyone else - Now I'm behind in just 90% of my garden smiley - biggrin
