    Hello everyone
Hope the sun is shining where you are. I just saw an article on Kew on their orchid display with the different orchids scattered among ferns etc. I have a small bed outside by the front door [4ft sq] and wondered if I could achieve an effect of dainty bulbs/perrenials scattered among my small ferns. I have some bluebells, snowdrops, a few fritillaries already, but wondered what other non bushy plants could grow in fairly heavy shade to around 12-18 inches high. I thought of giant lily of the valley, and just seen something called Chincherinchees in a catalogue, but would like more pastel colours too. It would be nice for all year round display.
I have some acquilegia seeds, can they tolerate lots of shade?
Any ideas would be appreciated immensely!

Look up Toad Lily Jonah and see what you think. I've recently bought some for my shady border.

This one is fairly small and rather pretty. I'm new to Toad Lilies so don't know much at all I'm afraid.

aquilegias will grow almost anywhere, my garden is full of them and I try to grow as many of the more unusual varieties as well, including the yellows, the black barlows, and the guinness and magpie varieties, I love them all and most will happily seed themselves all over. Joy Hello everyone

    Hi !
I have the tricyrtis formosana, a lilac toad lily. It is so nice in the border, looks very delicate.
Last year a bought 1 little pot more in the GC, but there were different rootsystems. I think I ended with 5 out of 1 pot.
Now they're completely gone, but I'm looking forward to when they will come back. Very very nice plant! smiley - star

Dicentra spectabilis (pink or white) will grow in fairly heavy shade, and so will some hardy Geraniums - I have himalayense (blue), macrorrhizum white ness (white), and nodosum whiteleaf (lilac). I also have a Primula on the shady side of my garden, and quite a few Leucojum aestivum bulbs - the flowers look a bit like snowdrops but bigger - about 12-18" high, in fact.

Thanks for the ideas, I've often thought of having hardy geraniums somewhere. I was looking on the web last night and came across dodecatheon [sounds like a dinosaur to me!], saxifraga and erythronium. If anyone has grown these please let me know if they fit the bill.

Saxifraga should grow fine in a shady spot Jonah.
