not sure if this the correct mb to ask this but i shall try anyway... we have discovered that there is rat run running across our middle garden, never seen them actually stopping on our garden, only running across it from either neighbours etc.. is there anything i can do to get rid of this problem? or do we just have to put up with it? all the local authority pest control say is they can lay traps, and asked us not to feed birds as encourages them etc, as for that they can't do anything.

It is never just one rat, you know. You might think you are only seeing one, but it means there are many...

    lurking out there somewhere...

I hope I haven't alarmed you. Set traps.

yes i know its not just one rat as i have seen lots together running over the garden to the neighbours and so on, traps are an option i agree but i am concerned as i have a dog and children. one neighbour is with me about the problem we both share but the other is elderly lady who insists on feeding birds with left over dinner etc on ground level and has actually said she like to see the rats 'playing' in her garden. thanks anyway for advice

WE had brown rats a few years ago, living behind the bottle wall and I tolerated them till somebody ate all my peas in the cold frame. I used poison. We can buy specially coloured stuff which other critters don't eat and which dessicates the body so there is no unpleasant smell should a mouse or rat crawl into your floor space and die. Haven't seen any since and always feed the birds away from the house.

    Hi
My friend had the same sort of problem. The lady next door to him used to throw out left over meals. There were rats every where. He reported her to the council. The council officer said if she did not stop it they would prosecute her for something like enticing vermin. She stopped doing it the council set poisoned traps and end of story.

Having recently had a rat problem in my back garden I can answer this.

You must stop all feeding of the birds. Whilst there is another food source the rats won't take any notice of the poison.

We used traps at first. We caught lots of mice but no rats. We then tried a rat box with poison. No joy with that either. We were told by a rat "expert" that the rats will not approach the traps or box because they smell new. We were told to bury them into the compost heap for a while to get the newness off them. Then place them in a known rat run, undercover and away from other critters. A drainpipe along the rat's run is often used with the poison inside.

I didn't like the idea of poison to be honest as I have pets and children.

Eventually we tried "Eradirat",because I didn't want to wait for the traps to get the compost smell. It is an organic rat killer that does not effect other animals and birds. It apparently dries the rat out and therefore you get no stink of decay. You usually don't find a body because they die in their nests. We placed a few pellets wrapped in cling film around where the rats were running. Under the shed,by the hole they had made in my shed floor, under a broken plant pot. We checked every day until the pellets were not taken any more. I've not since seen a rat. It took about a week.

If you see rats out in the day ,then they have babies. You must do something about it. I saw mine regularly jumping onto my plant pots and sitting staring back at me! I hated having to kill them but you can't have rats running about your garden.
