I thought I'd start a new discussion having been out in the garden this morning digging up centranthus which I wish I had never planted. My garden is full of it after planting 3 small plants about 3 years ago. I think all of my neighbours have also got it in their gardens too! I just wondered what have you planted that you wish you never had! My sister thought it was very pretty and took a clump for her garden, now she wishes she hadn't, well I did warn her.

I think the common name for centranthus is valerian. It comes in white, pink and red. It seems to grow everywhere and I,m beginning to wonder if it is really a weed! bamboo-alondide our boundary wall.

I agree, leylandii are a real pain. This is the fourth house I have lived in since I left home and in every garden have had to remove dozens of the wretched things. Not me personally, but many have – Leylandii. Ìý

I was given some of that and some perennial cornflower when I first started planting up my garden and used it as a filler in what was to become a shrub bed. It's taken ages but now we just get new seedlings each year and they get instant decapitation. I leave a few of the cornflower but don't let them spread into the flower borders any more.

I once planted some Jacob's Ladder. That was very promiscuous and took ages to clear and I also find Pokeweed popping up all over the place which is not so good as it is poisonous to humans and farm animals. I keep one clump at the back of a deep border but have to be careful of the others as we have cows next door from May to October.

We had 18 Leylandii. (Here when we moved in) They were all removed - all at 25 feet each - but I am still digging out the roots when trying to plant something.
Oh and we spread the bindweed round with the rotavator. I've got to say though, we didn't know any better at the time.
Other than that, I haven't planted much yet so this year is going to be a massive learning curve coz it's all going in and where it looks odd, it'll come back out again.

Does anyone else have a problem with winter flowering heliotrope??
It's a real pain - it spreads underground and is really invasive. Because of the nature of its leaves it is very difficult for roundup to penetrate. YUK!!

Oh Oh !! smiley - doh
I've planted some valerians last year and I have let them spread happily to have more (I can see little seedlings everywhere).
I was so happy with this, but I'll have to control this!!

No pests so far, but my neighbour lady (who is dead since 3 years and was then 95 and didn't go in her garden anymore) has so many elder-trees. In autumn the berries are everywhere, especially in my border. And in spring they seem to germinate! Lot's of weeding!! smiley - devil
