Just thought I'd share a little joy at having got out into the garden this pm & done some work. First time in ages & lots to be done. Pruned my wisteria, cut back a late clem so I can untie & prune the rose it grows through - I do put that off as I tend to get a bit caught up in it, then did a little general tidying & weeding & pondered where to put the forsythia that we bought at Wisley at the weekend (well it only grows to 5ft & it was 1/2 price!), let a bit of air in the greenhouse & got some muck under my fingernails. So not exactly alot of work but I did feel better for it. It's always good to see the bulbs poking through & buds waiting patiently to burst forth.

Ah you beat me to it Beejay!!! Hasn't the weather been just glorious today? I didn't do any gardening, but I got out there today and had a good look around. Even some tulips have started to push through. The days are noticably longer now and I'm already starting to feel full of the joys of spring - just because we've had a complete day of sunshine!!! I took LP for a walk this morning, walked to school as usual at lunchtime, walked to collect her then went onto the PO and shops, then walked home again. I can feel on my face that I've been in the sun, and I love it! I want more!!!

More sun forecast for tomorrow I think Plocket, then rain again. Do you think we are going to get the bad winter that has been talked about? It was interesting at Wisley the other day; they have a sheltered walled garden with all sorts of tender stuff like bananas which get well wrapped evey year. There are also some big tree ferns which were just left last year, But this year I noticed they had been well insulated. I wondered if that meant they were expecting some harsh weather. Anyway, enjoy yhe fresh air.

We've got sun and cloud forecast for tomorrow but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bit more nice weather. Rain not forecast until Sunday for us!!! Of course there's going to be more cold weather though - plenty of frosts between now and April, and perhaps more even then. I'm not convinced we are going to get a really hard winter though.

Wisley sounds glorious btw. I really must go and visit one day. And I really should arrange another visit to Harlow Carr, and I want to do Kew again this year.... Oh it's all so difficult now that LP has started school part-time.

Enjoy the weather Beejay! While it lasts!!!!!

Sunny here this afternoon too - didn't do any gardening but had a walk round the garden & refilled the birdfeeders & birdbath - much warmer out there too. Forecasts seem to disagree about here tomorrow - hoping it will be sunny as MIL & step-FIL are coming over to go to Anglesey Abbey in the morning & meeting us for lunch (& belated exchange of Christmas presents!).

As for cold winter - I'll believe it (or indeed anything else) only when I see it. It was snowing when I was born, apparently (in April), but other birthdays I have spent in the garden in a T-shirt & shorts, so I have no faith in the predictability of the English weather!

Well it wasn't actually sunny this am but nice enough to get out for a couple of hours. Tidied up the woodland (1 silver birch & some ferns) area & mulched it with some compost. Got a few of those late bulbs in.

The thing about the extreme winter thing that I find interesting is that I keep hearing people say well it didn't happen then - we usually get the worst weather in Jan/Feb don't we so you never know!

I have no faith in the predictability of the English weather!
Juliet, it's the unpredictability that makes us all talk about it so much.

    Hi all,

I heeded the advice regarding Mulching and spent yesterday removing all of the compost from my raised bed which OH built for me last summer and put it on my boarders which I made bigger at the end of summer so it all looks lovely and dark shame no plant growth yet, My sweetpeas are sprouting too.

Hi Borders! Got out into the garden this morning: tidied up my "potting shed" corner (I don't have a shed!), prodded compost and checked leaf mould while LP played. Had lots of sunshine again today but it was rather windy. This afternoon I moved my coldframe so that it gets more sun. I'm not sure I've got it adequately secured (two bricks!!!) but the plants should be happier, and it will be easier for me to open it now. Dierama and Verbena Bonariensis are in there now, and will go into the ground when all fear of frosts is gone, so some time to go yet!!!
