We are thinking about building a new archway with giant bamboo. It would have Lonicera, Graham Thomas & a Clematis on one side, other side yet to be decided. Has anyone used this & was it successful.

    Hi,

I have no experience of using giant bamboo - but when you think that it is used extensively for scaffolding in far-Eastern countries, then it should be suitable for an archway. Our climate is the only questionable issue - I think you should take steps to protect the ends from ingress of water - possibly plug with cork or rubber bungs, and use a sealant, and also ensure that the uprights are not buried in the soil - look for something like the Metpost range, but which is suitable for circular-section items such as bamboo and rustic poles.

Hope this helps. Kindest regards, Indeedee.

    Hi
What a great idea. Thats something I would never have thought of. You might start a new trend. Used bamboo in a chinese show garden once, great to work with and the thicker it is the longer it will last.I secured mine in the ground by digging out holes half filling with gravel then resting the ends on that and topping up. It was supposed to represent an entrace and was painted black. Looked very effective
The only other thing I have used it for was trellis. Thicker than the average cane and all screwed together, again very effective painted, it showed up the climber superbly. You might want to try that too
    regards
