I bought a large barrel over the internet last year with a view to creating a water garden but it stank of cider so I couldn't plant it up! LOL I'm hoping that it will be useable this year so I need some suggestions regarding which plants to buy. The barrel is around a meter in diameter and I will not be putting any fish in it (I was told that if you put fish in a container above ground that they will simply be poached in hot weather!!!!!)

    Thanks

    Sioned.

I planted a similar shaped "pot" garden a couple of years ago. I wanted a fairly minimal look so I've got Iris Versicolour (for flowers), Houttuynia Cordata "Chameleon" (for foliage and flowers), Thalia Delbata (for height - I'm told it's not hardy but I've not lost it yet, although the water garden is right near the house wall), and nymphaea aurora (coz I love water lilies). Just a few ideas for you!

I've got a barrel pond too. I have some elodea for oxygenation, an iris, a water lily (be careful to get one to suit the depth of your pond, it needs to be a dwarfing one) and a couple of lobelia cardinalis (although these do seem to be succumbing to some kind of pest that is eating the surface of the stem, my parents have had the same problem with their lobelia).

    Hi loobygraham

the Lobelia eater is probably snails or slugs, they enjoy these plants as much as Hosta's.

I watched them destroy mine last year, this year I will be armed as they are just breaking the surface with new growth

I'd have agreed but I don't think slugs and snails can swim and these plants were in a pond smiley - smiley
