Having seen Plocket raving about these gardens it was interesting to see an article on them in the latest copy of The Garden. Very briefly it was saying (I think as I didn't have my glasses on) that a lovely job has been done on the restoration of the Italian gardens so far but hopes that as it is all a commercial concern that the maintenance will be kept up to keep it looking good because it is likely to be quite expensive.
Hi Beejay! I don't read The Garden - grrrrr!
I feel you should know that the Italian Gardens are going to have a posh 5 star plus (mega posh I guess!) hotel built overlooking them, using some of the original old buildings that still remain there. I'm in two minds about this - part of me thinks it will detract from the garden, but I also think it will be how the gardens were originally designed and viewed, as part of an estate.
Bearing this hotel in mind, I think they will make a concerted effort to keep the gardens looking magnificent - and I can vouch for their efforts so far as you know. There have always been gangs of gardeners working hard planting, pruning, tidying, mowing..... Not only that, the gardens are expensive to visit: £4 for all day. But I don't begrudge that given all the work that is being done.
I think only time will tell with regards to the looking good versus expense issue, but my money is on the gardens always being kept looking good.
Hi Plocket
I'm working on getting the article to you - electronically doesn't seem to be working at the moment, so I might just forward my copy of the magazine in a few days when I've finished reading it...

Oh Margi that would be great - thank you very much.
Nice to see you back on the boards a bit btw - I've missed you
Mwah! Px
I've missed especially you and everyone else too! I've got to the stage where sometimes I feel like it and sometimes I don't - just hoping the 'do' days start outnumbering the 'don't' days!

Missing you too Margi
Plocket - give yourself a prezzy, a subscription to the RHS. Then you will get the magazine and access to seed, free access to the RHS gardens and shows and special member ticket prices to Chelsea, Tatton, Malvern etc.
Good pics of Trenton.

Hi Toadspawn! As tempting as RHS membership is I've decided that it isn't for me: none of the RHS gardens are within easy access, courses etc are impossible with a young child in my care, as are regular visits to shows. Oh and I get all the advice I need from you guys on these boards!!! Perhaps in a few years' time.
Plocket - do reconsider. I can't get to most of the shows or any of the courses but frankly the magazine is worth it on its own and the free access to the advisory service and extra infromation avaialble to members on things like the Plant Selector are a bonus. I can even get free entry to one or two places over here with my membership card.
I have decided I am going to Chelsea this year and have booked my ticket so I can see for myself - can't trust the Beeb coverage to do a good job any more. Last year's efforts were awful.
Plocket if you can it is worth it.
Being an RHS member also entitles you to visit other gardens eg Westonbirt, Welsh Botanic Garden, Ruyton and many others throughout the UK and also some of the Yellow Book Gardens. I have only been to Malvern in the past 4 years and have not been to any of the courses (a fungus forray about 3 miles away was one I would like to have attended but I had to miss), and as Obelix says the magazine by itself is good value.

Toadspawn and Obelixx - thank you so much for your comments, they really are appreciated. I just can't help thinking that I wouldn't do it justice at the moment - I hardly get time to read GW magazine these days, and I do like to get something for my money! £40+ is quite a bit for what will basically be a magazine subscription for the time being! I considered joining when I went to GWL but at this current time I really can't justify the expenditure. It's something I'll think about again when LP starts school though, when I've got more time.

Thanks Juliet! right back at you!
