Just wondered if there is anyone out there that is also involved in the Â鶹Éç Neighbourhood Gardener scheme - it would be great to hear from fellow neighbourhood gardeners across the country and to hear how you are getting on with your gardening projects.

Nope not me - Too busy in my newish garden. I think it's an excellent idea though and have often wondered why no one has posted on this before (in my recollection).

I do in a small way offer "advice" smiley - laughsmiley - laughsmiley - laugh on a very special school's garden in farthest Kent though. Admittedly it's along the lines of "what not to do" and how to source freeish help. I've suggested the Neighbourhood Scheme and they managed to get the idea in the local paper, but with no takers.

Jackie - Can you inspire us as to what project you are involved in?

I've been wondering about this too as it seems an eminently sensible but fun thing to do. I'd love to hear more from anyone involved. There seems to be nothing like it over here.

Having been involved in the scheme since the beginning our group has been involved in a number of projects mainly in local schools and also at local hospitals.
Our most recent and current project is on an allotment site in conjunction with a local environment group who want to involve the local community (including local schools and youth groups) to create a 'demonstration' allotment site and wildlife garden.
Our aim is to share our gardening knowledge and to encourage others to make improvements to their local environment.
I note from your message that you are just the other side of the river from us in Essex. Don't know if Neighbourhood Gardener is active in your area but have had a couple of enquiries from people your way - personally I think it is a great scheme and have learnt many new gardening skills along the way as well as making many new friends.
Good luck with the school garden - someone told me about a great website the other day which was encouraging kids to grow vegetables (linked to the new Wallace and Gromit film)- check out www.teachernet.gov.uk/growingschools/ for more details. From what I've seen there is plenty of advice around if you know where to look and a definite enthusiasm to encourage children to garden; after all they are the gardeners of the future.

I live a zillion miles from farthest Kent and indeed Essex these days (more Wessex) though I once lived in Leytonstone smiley - yikes and was in Chingford last week. I will check out the website you mentioned. Can I ask you a favour though? Keep posting updates, photos (most impact) and nag everyone here who might have a few free hours to join in their local group? I will back you up BTW! Cheers! smiley - ale

I will happily keep you updated and encourage anyone that wants to get involved to do so.

Check out the neighbourhood gardener part of the Â鶹Éç gardening website; you can find some general information about the scheme and stories from neighbourhood gardeners about how they became involved.

If you need some volunteers locally I suggest that you contact your local CVS (Council for Voluntary Service) or volunteer centre - I have been working with my local CVS for the past nine months to establish a new group and found them very helpful, supportive and informative and a great source for volunteers - after all that is what they are there for.
