Well we've had a few days of frost and fog, and some days the temperature didn't go above zero! But today was clear and not quite so cold. The inch thick ice in my water garden has melted slightly, and some of my plants even look as though they have recovered a little. Snow's forecast though - let's see if the Weather Guys are right hey?

Here's a link to see a few photos:

Plocket, what beautiful photos, I went to take some the other day but our camera is being very temperamental at the moment and wouldn't work.
Not sure about the weather, where we are we seem to be not quite midlands, nor southwest or southeast, and we often escape really bad weather. We have had very cold nights and very thick fog though.

Shame about your camera Emily - beat it 'til it sneezes! As for the weather, we seem to be in a bad patch at the moment but sometimes seem to miss bad weather. LP loves it and keeps telling me it must be Christmas because it's snowed!!!

Its been a very long time since i have seen such heavy frosts this early over such a long period of time, ive been a gardener for 40 years, here in the SE it is very rare for frosts to do so much damage early in late autumn, we have been lucky not to have any bad fogs, i remember way back in the 60s just starting in the trade when the fogs (smogs) were terrible, if the weather men are right then we have more bad weather to come soon, but i do not rely on them if i did i would not leave home in the morning, like the pics i must have a go myself i aways have time and see many thousands of different species and cultivars every year, i use the screen for design work etc but have never been shown how to use the digital camara and down load it and so on, suppose ill need a new computer never mind i must have a go soon its so interesting and rewarding like gardening.

    Hey Plocket

I didn't know you had enough room in your garden to upgrade from 'swamp pit' to 'swan lake' ..... Very good pics though .. I like the one with the cob webs.

PML! Swamp pit is looking good isn't it, and you should have seen the gunnera!!! Actually the swans were at our local Wildlife Trust - we went to feed them as it was so cold - they were glad of it too!

The patio is looking wonderful thank you for asking! There's a photo of it on my photos - have you had a chance to look?

The Wildlife Trust is a wonderful place - it's an Estate that has basically gone back to nature (the house isn't there any more), and the Trust has it's head office there. They are doing lots of lovely work there and are currently working on a sensory garden.

Not sure If I've seen the pics of the patio. I hope you'll get some nice sun in spring to start enjoying it ASAP....
The sensory garden must be nice. I suppose even for enabled garden lovers it is a good idea to close ones eyes every now and then and just listen, feel, and smell...

Plough through this lot William and you'll get a little peek!

The sensory garden looks lovely so far, but it is early days - lovely paths through grasses, different textures to walk on, lots of seating - I've high hopes. The volunteers are fantastic and work incredibly hard: the results are noticable each week. Funnily enough they often make me think of you and your coppicing work. smiley - winkeye

Very well done, nice seating area for table and chairs in a spot where the don't stumble over them...

The coppicing we do is a bit more in hidden or unnoticed spots. Some places aren't even open for the public, although most of them can be seen. First priority is wildlife (floral and animal)

    Hi Plocket

Your garden looks great and I love the patio. I love the frosty pics as well.

I really must work out how to get some of my pictures onto something like you've done and then put a link to it. Although my garden isn't "great" (yet !!), I'm still quite proud of what we've done in the time we've been here. It's looking a bit sorry for itself at the moment with all this frost. I must try and get out and tidy up before Christmas. Mrs A goes back to work in Feb so I'll have a lot less time to do anything after that !

    Cheers
    Andy

The table and chairs were in the middle of the garden William!!!

The coppicing sounds like a good thing - I used to think it was maiming trees! The only real maintenance that the WT do is for wildlife - that's their thing after all.

Oops .... I suppose the view of the rest of the garden behind it must have been obscured by the growing collection of clematisses .... smiley - whistle

He he he! The collection hasn't grown much recently although there are two more on my list to go near the new patio. It's amazing what a difference the patio makes - the garden has expanded because when it was boggy we just didn't use that corner. Now we have a patio we can use it more. And the garden looks so different from there too!

Nice frosty pictures Plocket. Last night was the first one here above freezing for a few days. But it has been soooo wonderful; crisp but with sunny blue skies. That is except Sunday when we went to Kew to catch the sun on the frosted leaves. That's the day it refused to put it's hat on & come out to play. Still, got my husband to explain some of the intricacies of the digital camera. Now it's just downloading & posting.

Hi gang. For once you chaps seem colder than us. Friday and the weekend we had thick fog and frosts all day around here though it was sunny towards Brussels. Instead of gardening, as planned, we had a scintillating time dismantling, moving and rebuilding a Swedish wardrobe and then emptying out the study for painting and reorganising.

It had thawed by Sunday pm but too late to start anything and yesterday and today we crept up above 3C by day. This afternoon it was clear and dry enough to go out and cut the grass but that's all. I still have perennials to move and bulbs to plant and a home to find for my new daphne and the damson and gage still need planting so I hope this is just the usual November aberration and things will warm up for a week or two so I can finish everything before the winter really starts in January.

Despite the cold, there is a new flower on Etoile Violette today and the penstemons and roses are hanging on too.

Do they do miners' helmets with digital cameras on? Because my best photo moments are when my hands are caked in mud....

I am sure there is a gap in the market there ... and with Christmas coming up soon, get marketing!! Not sure the solar powered mining lamp would be a great success though (at least not down the mines), so stick to batteries!!

Lovely pics as always, Plocket. The frosts are amazing. It is so much colder here this year - it will be a true test of what is hardy in London. I suspect I was a tad complacent last year (not knowing any better, I hasten to add)!!

    Nice frosty pictures, Plocket.

We can't have snow yet, though! - worked out today I've got 12 more days' worth of jobs to do in the garden this year! Don't think I can trim the potentillas & berberis & train the jasmines if they've been snowed on smiley - sadface - and I was wanting to put more woodchip round all the flowerbeds; certainly can't do that once it's snowed!
