Posted this on the clinic site with no joy, can anyone here help?
    Dear All
I renewed my pond liner in autumn this year of my wildlife pond. It has in the past been full of wildlife, frogs newts etc, (but no fish, as I'm not a great lover of them, unless they are covered in batter)!
I saw Mr Titchmarsh take a turf edge right into the pond which I have replicated, so wildlife can gain access easier. But I have found that the grass is acting like a sponge and making the grass sodden.
Does anybone know what I'm doing wrong?

Perhaps the water level should be an inch or so below the edge of the turf.

    Rita, hi.
But if I do that you can then see the liner! The idea was to hide the liner and assist the wildlife, I distinctly remember A.T. saying this!

I remember seeing that and wondering how you're suppose to keep the edges of the turf tidy. I'd take the turf up and put some moisture-loving plants and/or slabs there instead.

I actually liked the look of the turf going straight in as its right by my lawn, without any plants on that side, but I just thought somebody must have done this and experienced the same problem.

    Hi Paul.

I too remember Mr. Titchmarsh doing the same but I wondered how the grass gets mowed in that area. I don't think you are doing anything wrong as the sod will act like a wick and draw the moisture up.

My thought would be to keep the water level slightly below the sod line, as was suggested, and allow the grass to grow in length so the blades can touch the water. I think there is less danger of the wicking action plus the added length of the grass will cover the liner!

Did you line the entire pond with grass? My wildlife pond is primarily lined with stones but there are areas where some grass and thrifts have grown over the liners edge. Many songbirds, chipmunks, salamanders and toads come to visit. I haven't seen any frogs yet.

When I figure out how to do it, I'll post a picture of my little puddle.

    Kindest regards.

    Chick
    Good advice!
I think I'm going to have to cut the turf back a bit & just let the grass grow longer!
The pond is edged on one side with cobbles & pebbles, lawn on one side & paving on other. It looks a treat but the grass is also dying back a bit, with all the water.

You pond edging sounds lovely! Maybe you could have some marginals or bog plants like Umbrella Grass near the edge. They will naturally make their way to the water's edge and beyond. Since they love water you need not worry about them getting too wet.
