...or (to continue the Cold Weather thread) have we already had more frost over the past week than we had through all of last winter?
I seriously cannot remember any significant frosts last year, and certainly my (insulated) greenhouse never froze up inside like it has this week.
In for a tough one I think!
Yes Slugger, it is just you.
No, you are probably right. I remember January being mild, although Christmas was horribly cold. It is certainly crispy and white here today - looks great and I am about to go out and scamper in it.
Scamper on, you Scamp!
Last Feb and early March we had snow for Three weeks and temps down to -20 so you must have had a bit of frost over your way!
Min was -3.5C last winter over our way, which got beaten last night at -3.8c

Thanks Slugger, I did. Even managed a bit of a frollick and a slight cavort.
I hope this weather holds out for the weekend, I can't wait to get out and have a rummage in the garden.

That's as may be, but I have some serious digging to do - how am I supposed to do that if the ground is rock hard?!!!

Pneumatic drill? JCB? Wait till spring?
It won't be you Wuss! It takes several days of serious cold to freeze the ground harde enough to stop you being able to dig. The surface may be a bit crusty but that's all.
hi tis cold yes, two nights of proper frost now.
the frost doesnt seem to melt either through the day. just stays there! Also need to do some digging, need to dig a drainage trench along the back lawn, but i think i shall have to see if the ground warms up a bit if not, its a case of top layer of grass off and the rotavator will come out!
heard a funny story about the frost and digging at work expereince. they once were told to make a bunker bigger, in the frost! they hit the ground with a sade to dig, it snapped, they went througyh three spades then decided it waasnt the best weather to dig!

I'm sorry for being so flippant Slugger. I have just remembered that I'm planning to sow some seeds this weekend, and my sowing compost is in the shed. It won't be frozen solid but I know it is going to be very nippy on the fingertips.
Adam - the frost hasn't been hard enough or long enough for you to worry about being unable to dig. Admittedly it has been a lovely sight but a white frost just freezes the water on the plants and in the air (hoar frost). It does not penetrate the ground so get out your spade and get digging. Do your trench before the end of the year. We don't normally get frost severe enough to make the ground so hard that it cannot be broken with a spade until Jan/Feb.
