    Hi there

I grew tomatoes for the first time last year and it was a success, however I brought the wrong variety as I would rather really small cherry/sweet tomatoes, can anyone recommned the best ones to buy? I think last year I brought gardeners delight and they grew too big and I was disappointed with them!

    Many thanks, for any advice.

    Jane

    I brought gardeners delight

?????? I consider GD to be a cherry tomato and it is quite small as tomatoes go that is around 25mm (1") in diameter.

If you want smaller than that then ther is Piccolo or Nectar.

Personally I don't like them (too sweet) but I grow them for my family, my grandkids love them.

I put two GD's in a 10" pot and and give each of the grandkids a pot to grow outdoors.

I find that because they are so small they ripen easier outdoors than larger varieties do!

I also believe there is also a varieties called Million something and Tumbler but I have not tried these so can't comment on them!

    Hi there

Thanks for your advice, I grew my GD in pots (cant remeber what size) but inside my pop up greenhouse, do you suggest to keep them outside? what time of year do you plant them?

    Thanks

do you suggest to keep them outside?

    Not really!

I only suggested this so that my grandkids can can have a go then eat the fruits of their labour.

I grow mine under glass, but they will grow quite well outdoors, particular if located in a sun trap and we get a reasonable summer.

In term of growing this years crop, my lot are just showing their first pair of leaves at the moment.

I have them in 3" pots in a heated greenhouse at the moment, where they will remain till around May then I will prepare the pots for the grandkids.

In about 4-6 weeks time I will move them to a frost free cool greenhouse to harden off a bit!

I won't give the pots to them until all fear of frost has passed.

Usually they are around 12"-15" high when I give them to the grandkids, or if you like....ready to go outdoors.

Hi Jane, I grew some "Tumbler Tom" tomatoes one year in a hanging basket, lots of fruit, but I found them a little too small so didn't bother again, they might suit you though if you find Gardeners' Delight too large. Nan x

Jane, the best cherry I've come across in 25 years of growing is an heirloom called Camp Joy. It's sometimes also known as Chadwick's Cherry. It's indeterminate, grows into a bit plant, but produces masses of delicious toms over a long period. You'll find them at some of the online seed merchants.
