I have moved into a property that has masses of raspberry canes that haven't been pruned back in Autumn, I want to thin them out and also prune them back but wondered in March what I should do as I don't want to totally destroy them. Not sure of the variety, so any advice much appreciated.

Basically there are two types: summer fruiting, which you cut back in the autumn, and which bear fruit on the new canes that are coming up from late summer onwards, and autumn fruiting ones, which you cut back in early spring, and which fruit on new canes that start to appear in the spring.

So if you see any canes that seem dry and a bit dead, it's probably OK to cut them out, right to the ground. Also cut out anything that looks unhealthy or really spindly and weak, and leave just the strongest and most vigorous loooking ones. If the canes seem to have healthy new leaves appearing, or new shoots pushing up, leave them alone and see what happens. A bit of a feed with super phosphate or some high potassium feed should help encourage fruiting.

I have twice taken over old raspberry canes without a clue as to how to treat them. I don't think I did anything much to them the first year, and I always had some fruit. It may be a bit hit and miss this year, but by the end of the season you'll know what to do with them next year.

Thank you - much appreciated. Looked and some seem to have new buds on them so will leave them and chop back the dead looking ones and see what happens.
