hi and happy new year to everyone.I have an alotment its my second year growing veg on this scale.I live abut 15 min drive from alotment so decided to get a greenhouse for out my back so it saves me a lot of driving time.
Now back to the onion sets i planted them stright in the ground last year but this year i was thinking about potting them up and putting them in the gh and then putting them in the garden when it gets a bit warmer so would it be ok to do this if i start them of in a unheated greenhouse about beging of feb.Or any recommendations on when to do this
    many thanks shaun.

Seems like a lot of work to pot them up first.I plant sets because they are easy. I would just wait until the beginning of March (weather permitting) and then plant them directly with the tips just showing. I dont think you have much to gain by potting them up !

    Hi Shaun

I have successfully grown onion sets in a cold green house for the past 2 winters in 75mm cells then transplanted in early June.Similarly celery and beetroot.

    Regards

The reason that people use onion sets instead of planting from seed, is that it gives about three months growing time advantage for sets against seed!

Onions grown from seed need to be sown very early in the season to get proper sized bulbs, and also that they have time to ripen off!

For sets planted in Spring in the soil, there is a long enough growing time for wether you want tennis ball size or larger, so there is no real advantage of wasting valuable greenhouse space!

I also don't plant single onion sets per station, but put in three sets, also with the spacing I used to use for single planted sets, they grow exactly the same size planted this way!

    Cheers!
