Hi,
We had our chimneys swept before Christmas, and the sweep told my husband, that people ask him for soot for their gardens. The upshot of this is.... he has dropped a few bags of it off, and now, we do not know what to do with it.......HELP. LOL
Josie
Stick it in a corner of the garden and forget about it for a couple of years. After that, it's good round the base of shrubs and a foliar feed andt bug spray can be made from diluted sooty water. Cheers, Tony.
I agree with Tony
This an extract from my website;
Soot;
Allow to weather before use to disperse chemicals such as sulphur.
Dig in or water in during Spring & Summer
Solid rate; 4oz per sq yd (100gms per sq metre)
Liquid rate; 8oz (200gms) per gallon (5 litres)of clean water.
Traditionally it used to be put on the onion bed.
I suspect the sweep was very pleased to get rid of it!
If you rake some into the surface of your soil, the soil will become darker and when the the warmth of the sun returns, then a dark soil warms quicker than a light coloured soil. There is a low nitrogen value too, let the weather and worms get to work before sowing any seeds though.
