  My maris pipers produced a great crop this year, and there were many really good sized ones amonst them. However, when I boil them, they are all prone to breaking up in the water, whereas they are normally nice and firm. Also I notice that nearly all have holes in them this year. Has anyone else had the same problem, and whats the best way to keep the critters out?

  I had the same problem with my King Edwards, and a lot of people have reported similar. It's related to the dry Spring we had apparently.
  
  Bake or quick par-boil and then roast should work for cooking them.

  You could steam them instead of boiling them, too.
  Holes are often caused by keeled slugs which live in the soil. Together with crop rotation (which should always be used, given enough space), you could try nematodes to control those, or switch to a slug-resistant variety. I find the 'Sarpo' varieties are both slug and blight resistant.
  A web search for 'slug resistant potatoes' will produce results which include varieties which others have had luck with.

  Hi, I had exactly the same problems as you with maris piper, they went to a mush when they were boiled, only good in scouse i suppose the would be o/k in a stew.

  Thanks for the replies, glad its not just me. I guess I'll try some other varieties, but am interested in the nematodes suggestion as well, if it meant I could still grow Maris Piper. Has anyone else found that these have made a significant difference?
