You have a computer! Get Googling! Put some effort into building up a sound basic knowledge. This will repay you in bigger better harvests in the long run. Actually if you don't build your knowledge base then you will quickly become discouraged. Dare I say it - Buy a good book on the Grow Your Own theme. Browse in a local garden centre for a book you find accessible (there are hundreds!). This pastime/hobby is like a compost bin - What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

    Happy growing

Your best bet would be to read the instructions on the packets. Most crops are started in the Spring or late Winter if you have a greenhouse.

Do not let your wish to grow vegetables over-take your experience. Some vegetables are really easy, some more challenging.

Avoid growing vegetables that are easily accessible in the supermarket, for example maincrop potatoes, maincrop carrots and swedes. Go for early vegetables and vegetables where you will never find the quality in the supermarket, for example beans, French and runner, and broad beans, and tomatoes.

Spend the winter browsing catalogues - avoid the over-colourful ones, I find their germination rates are not good.

Get books out of the library. Above all else avoid people who give you odd advice, which you know in your heart of hearts is wrong. Come back to this messageboard there are lots of experienced people here.

    Take it slowly and enjoy.

Could not agree more with the excellent advice given here. There is no rush to get it all done at once, and this really is not the best time of year. However, I do remember the keeness to get started once the greenhouse has come, and everything seems possible! Maybe you could get a pack of mixed leaf seeds and start off with some baby salad leaves? They take very little growing and it is great to have something to eat that is of your own growing.

Other than that, read, read and then read to get some ideas of what you want to do. Do you need or want to do any hard landscaping, build raised beds or whatever, yu can do those things in winter. Pore through the catalogues, go on-line and see what advice there is for your area, your wishes - do you want to be organic? Do you want fruit or veggies first - list what you want, make plans and dream dreams, then come spring, you can begin the addiction that is gardening. Talk with neighbouring gardeners, most people are delighted to share their advice and knowedge. Gardeners are usually very good like that. As the other poster said, read the seed packets, the people who sell them want you to get the best from them so that you will come back and buy more next time.

Whatever you do, enjoy - it's a great game.
