Just cleared weeds logs etc from my garden, ready to start my vegetable plot. But whilst digging up the weeds i've discovered an area of what i presume must be burnt soil.It must be 5ft in diametre and about 8ins deep.Do i need to dig up this soil? or do i mix it in with compost and top soil?

We found lots of areas of soil upon which there had been bonfires. All we have ever done is dig them over and mixed in top soil and compost as you say. Only problem we have ever encountered is the huge number of rusty nails and bits which still turn up on those areas.

Dependant on the soil type i think that a good fork over and some organic matter will be all that is required as the original content of the soil will be there only that the humus in the soil will have combusted. If the soil is clay then it may be wise to add some grit as well because binfire sites can often become waterlogged in winter and then really dry in the summer. You may have even gained something from having more ash content! Good luck
