I am thinking of starting a asparagus bed. I would be grateful for any tips and advice.
    Many thanks in anticipation.

A few tips? Here goes (from someone who has grown asparagus for over 30 years!)
    1. Grow from 'Crowns' , not seed - usual planting time is late March/ April.
    2. For best results choose an all-male variety.
    3. Asparagus has a very extensive root system so anything grown near it will be starved of moisture and plant food. [Incorporate as much FYM or compost in the bed before you plant]
    4. Don't cut any shoots this year - let the plants get established.
    5. Cut only a 'taster' next year to allow the plants to really develop.
    6. Cut shoots in succeeding years until mid June (you should have plenty by then) and then let the foliage develop and turn brown - then cut it off at ground level.
    7. To keep the foliage tidy and not flop all over the garden (especially if you are exposed to wind) put posts in at each end of the row and tie to a string between them.
    8. Be patient in the early years and you will enjoy a substantial crop for the next 15 years!
