This isn't actually about allotments but I'm posting this on all the gardening websites. I work in a school and some of the pupils have Visual Impairments. Our school has recently been awarded £1000 for being an eco-school and it's been decided that the money should be used to make a sensory garden for these kids.

I'm don't have a great knowledge of plants but thought 'ah hah the people on the bbc gardening board will' so here I am asking any of you for any suggestions of plants, bushes, grasses anything really that is 'sensory' so that could be bright colour, smell, texture, etc.

    Thanks in advance, Ellie

    Hi Ellie

What a great idea, I'm not very good at plants (I only grow veggies and herbs), but I would have rosemary, because it smells so lovely and is also quite a tactile plant. Sorry I can't be of anymore help. Good luck though!

Hello Ellie, I like the sound of this garden!
Just a few ideas... pamphas grasses for texture and sound, also things like bamboo will make rustling noises. Sweet corn would also probably make a noise and the cobs are interesting texture. Dahlias are usually very bright and eye-catching, and saw some amazingly big, round, orange marigolds on someone's plot last year, think they were African ones so I'm going to give them a go, so vibrant, really made me stop and look.
For scent, night scented stock, chocolate cosmos (really smells of chocolate), sweet peas are very fragrant. I'm sure others will come up with far more ideas, good luck. smiley - smiley

what a brilliant idea, I grow a plant which I only know as lambs ears but it's beautifly soft to touch and easy to grow.I also grow herbs and a curry plant smells great, also recommend fennel, sage smells and feels good, oregano, thyme, and of course mint of which you can plant lots of different types that all smell different. Good luck with your project keep us up to date with your progress, normangnome
